Shinigami
Name: Shirai Narita
Gender: Male
Age:
Life: 17 Death: 205 Total: 222 Looks 17
Division: Ten
Rank: Third Seat
Physical Description:
Shirai stands about 5’5” in height and weighs 135 lbs. He has a slight build and seems like he is weaker than he actually is. Shirai keeps his hair short and manageable and is always clean-shaven, it is important to look professional if he is to be taken seriously by those around him. His hair is a light reddish colour and his eyes are an emerald green. Shirai has a sleek athletic body type as he enjoys moving about and using his size to his advantage. Even though he looks small and weak it is not true, he is deceptively strong for his size and can match those who are taller than him in tests of strength. His size gives him the weakness that causes him to be less resistant to damage as other people would be, strikes having a better chance to hit a vital point than on a larger opponent.
Shirai normally wears the standard Shinigami outfit, the black gi with the sandals and would not dream of altering it as he might get in trouble for such a thing. When on duty he carries Kagami on his left side, within drawing space of his left hand. On duty he always stands straight and attempts to look as professional as he can.
When Shirai is off duty he normally wears peasant clothing with a straw hat to cover his features. He does not like being treated as a Shinigami when he is attempting to enjoy himself, he does not want the responsibility. When he is off duty he looks more welcoming and happy, enjoying living his life and happy to share it with others as long as they do not treat him like a superior or a subordinate.
Shirai has a large scar across his back from a training accident when he was in the academy training with a friend in a small clearing in some woods nearby. His friend had some experience in healing, but not enough. He did succeed in healing the wound but it left the scar that forever reminds him to be careful.
While in his Gigai in the real world he loves to keep up with the fashion of the time and can usually be seen wearing whatever it is that is fashionable at that point in the real world area he is patrolling. He keeps these clothes around in his residence in case the fashion makes a come back or if he ever wishes to stand out around the Seireitei with his teammates.
Personality:
When Shirai is on duty he seems to be the epitome of a good Shinigami. He acts as any soldier should on the battlefield and follows any orders given to the T, however, in reality Shirai likes to slack off. Whenever he is sure he will not get caught he always takes the easy route, fighting the weaker opponent and leaving the stronger one to his teammate or rushing through paperwork instead of taking his time. He will do whatever he can to make people think he is a good subordinate, even if it is actually being a good subordinate when there’s a chance another person of his squad will see him.
When Shirai is on duty in the real world he is a different man. He always does the best he can and is always looking around for souls to save, if he is in his Gigai or not. He never wants a person to go through the loneliness that he went through the week where there was no one around to interact with. He does know that he needs leisure time and will not take away from that but once he is needed, he heads out to aid immediately.
Off duty Shirai is a very easy going person, not wanting to be bothered with responsibility if he does not need to be. Shirai is normally a very happy person when he is off shift due to the fact that he is not working and has nothing to worry about. He enjoys socializing with all different types and learning about other people and why they are the way they are, especially those with drastically different personalities from his own. He is willing to have this type of conversation even with his enemy if it is not too dangerous to do so. He enjoys drinking and can be known to cause a little ruckus while doing so. Anyone that drinks with him will be quickly endeared to him. He has no problem making friends and even close relationships as opposed to most other people in his squad. He believes if he is dead, he wants his memory to live on with as many people as possible.
His opinion of other Shinigami is a mixed bag. He usually likes to evaluate each on there on merits but as a whole he gravitates toward those who do not take their position too seriously. Anyone that is willing to accompany him on his escapades after his shift is over he will give the benefit of the doubt. He stretches this belief to all souls that live in Rukongai.
Shirai has no love for Hollow as they are logic-less killing machines that think of nothing but sating their own hunger. They will be much better off with their souls cleansed and sent on to live the life they were meant to after death. The more intelligent Hollow he looks upon with curiosity. He would love to have a long conversation with one to figure out just how their mind works, but he would not let them continue with their ways to do so. Vizard are a being he has no knowledge that they could even exist, but if he figured out they did, and they were friendly he would quickly invite them out for a drink to see how much different they actually are from their Shinigami counterparts.
As it may be seen Shirai loves talking philosophy with others. Any person that can make him think means they think deeply upon the subjects themselves. Anyone who shows any sort of intelligence should be seen as an equal, no matter what rank they may hold. Even in normal conversation, Shirai migrates toward conversations that may cause conflict because nobody will think upon their beliefs if no one challenges those beliefs.
Shirai likes to believe he keeps his room clean and organized but from an outside view this is a total lie. His room looks to be a total mess but he knows where everything is and can find what he is looking for just as fast as he could in a neat and organized room. Unlike his room he likes to keep himself pristine to make it seem like he is trustworthy and takes his job seriously, but this simply coincides with his wish to not work too hard.
History:
Shirai was born into a lesser nobility family in the Kii province. His family’s main task was that of basic soldiers. Destined into becoming a samurai from his Daimyo he trained hard once he could pick up his katana. Shirai was focused on his duty for most of his life that he never gained any true friends and the only acquaintance he had was with his two younger siblings, Sakura and Kazu. They were always running about playing as he was training, always wanting to be around their elder brother, and he did not mind the company as long as they did not get in the way of his duty. He was the ideal son for his father, someone who would not flinch in the line of duty, an excellent heir to the Narita name.
At the age of seventeen Shirai was training alone in a clearing in the woods when he heard a rustling in the bushes nearby. Preparing for anything he readied to strike, but it turned out to be the young son of the Daimyo. Relief washed over Shirai before worry set in. Why was he here? Where were his guards? Shirai quickly took this opportunity to bring the child back to his father to gain honour for his family. On the way back to the Daimyo’s residence he was ambushed by enemies of the province, aiming to kill the first born son of the Daimyo. Shirai eventually killed the three soldiers but not without killing the Daimyo’s son first. This was a tragedy and was a great wound to Shirai’s honour. If he were to return he would be ordered to commit seppuku. If he ran away however, his family would have to make up for that loss of honour. In the end, Shirai did was he was brought up to do and bring the child’s body back to his father and accept his fate that he was unable to protect him. As he suspected he was told to commit seppuku out of rage and sadness by the Daimyo and thus he did, with his father seconding. At least he would die making up for the mistake he made in life, his honour restored.
The pain in his stomach was searing, an incredible pain that was nearly unbearable. Shortly after Shirai made his cut there was a sharp pain on the back of his neck then all the pain he was in disappeared. He blacked out at that moment, understanding death was upon him. It was and it wasn’t. His eyes opened once more looking upon the dark skies above. From his chest was a long silver chain that seemed to be broken after about one meter of length. His eyes and head throbbed for a moment as he got up and looked around. He was standing near the temple in his town. He did not know why he was here or how he survived his fate or why there was a chain in his chest. He pulled on the chain a bit and noticed it was locked in there firmly. Any chance of interacting with others was in vain, it was as if they could not see him, as if he did not exist. It was madness. How could they not see him if he was right here? It did not make sense. He decided to stay around the temple, as it made him feel safe, at least at the moment.
That safety lasted for a week. A week of loneliness and isolation, a time that people would flutter about but no one would even realize he was there. His chain was slowly degrading and he did not know what that meant. A loud crash and a roar interrupted his pondering. A large creature appeared out of the forest. It had a white mast over its face as two long white horns like a rhinoceros. The people in the area scattered but it seemed like the creature was after him. He started running trying to get away from this monstrous demon that was intent in running him down. Even after some fancy footwork and some evasive maneuvers the monster caught him and ran him through with his horn. Tossing Shirai to the ground it snorted and moved in for the kill. Shirai could feel his life slowly melting away. This was a horrible way to die. Once he decided it was all over he hear a voice. It said something along the lines of ‘Roar, Ikazuchi!’ and then there was a thunderclap in the sky. There was no rain earlier and now there was a flash of light in the sky. As the light flashed there was a man in the sky, he swore he saw someone. Lightning crashes from the sky and strikes the monster through the head. After a second the monster simply vanishes and the mean was standing over Shirai. Shirai could not see very well, his vision blurring as death approached him. The man’s sword turned from its lightning bolt shape to that of a normal katana as he pressed the butt of the sword against Shirai’s forehead saying, ‘Don’t worry. You will be safe now.’ Then the world faded and he felt better, like he was going to a place where he belonged.
The next thing he knew he was in a town. The place was nice, reminded him of home. A swift pace was about here, people going about doing their jobs. This place he would soon know was called District 15. Soon a young woman, Lala, who was living alone took him in, kept him around for the company. She ran a bakeshop that was open on the main thoroughfare in the 15th. Thus for many years to come he lived with this woman, a nice person who reminded Shirai of an older version of his sister. They shared many good days and a few sad ones, Lala taught him to bake the most delicious cinnamon rolls and Shirai taught her how to go out and have a good time. They worked together well but Shirai was unfulfilled. He wished to continue the training that he did in life. With some of his savings he bought a katana and started training when he had the time.
Shirai’s skill continues to grow, but he would not give up his new family in Lala. One day his life changed. He was training on the roof of his house as he usually does when he felt something, a pressure. He assumed it was one of those Shinigami he heard about. He looked down over the edge of the building and he saw someone who he would not forget even if it were in another life. The man who saved his life… unlife… well, whatever it is called when you are a spirit. The man was buying bread from Lala. Quickly hurrying down Shirai had a long conversation with the man. His name was Raijinn and he was a member of the Tenth Division of the Shinigami, the division that kept the human world safe, their job was to send souls on and purify the hollows.
After that destined meeting Shirai kept meeting with Raijinn, drinking with him and learning about the Shinigami. The more he learned of these Death Gods the more he was driven to become one, to aid other people as Raijinn had helped him. This caused him to apply for the Academy. In the Academy he was an average student, Kidou being his strongest ability with Zanjutsu being second. He trained hard in the Academy and focused on trying to enter the Tenth Division but upon his graduation he was placed in the Seventh Division because of his skill with Kidou.
It was during his reign as an unseated member of the Seventh Division that he first met Kagami. He saw her while practicing his Blue Fire, Crash Down. She was floating over the target and questioning him if he knew her and what not. Not being entirely sure how to proceed with the spirit he continued in polite conversation, answering her questions the best he could but she kept on asking. A few weeks later he entered her world and everything became a little clearer. Shirai slowly formed a bond with Kagami and they eventually saw eye to eye on matters and this finally let him learn to release her from her sealed state. At first Shirai did not know anything besides the Flash maneuver and deemed Kagami to have a really weak Shikai but he kept working on it, never giving up and trying to do the best with what he had. Eventually they had another talk and he unlocked the last of the ability Kagami had.
By this time news had spread that Raijinn had been killed in battle. The man that saved his soul was no longer and his position opened up within the Tenth Division. Putting in a transfer order and a request with the Captain on the division himself, Shirai hoped that he could take up the mantle of his dead friend.
Additional Info:
General
Name: Kagami
Spirit Description:
Kagami shows herself as a small girl, no more than three feet in height. She has long white hair that waves in a nonexistent wind and she wears a full-length white robe that waves in the same wind. A small brooch in the shape of a silver edged mirror holds on the robe. Whenever Kagami appears she is usually floating in the air. Kagami’s dull gray eyes look upon Shirai with sorrow and pity that he will never truly understand what he is.
Kagami is a very apathetic spirit, rarely ever making a concrete statement, always questioning actions rather than commenting upon them. The rare instances she does make an actual comment Shirai knows to listen, as the information she will present at that moment is important and not to take it lightly. At some times she will not even answer the question posed because it is unimportant at the moment.
Kagami’s world looks just like a maze of mirrors. Everywhere you look there is only a reflection, even the floor and ceiling have reflective surfaces. Kagami appears in one of these surfaces at any given time. If you attempt to navigate the maze you will quickly find that there is no end to it, nor there any true dead ends. Kagami follows around whomever it is in her maze without truly reacting to them physically, showing no emotion to those she speaks with. Even though there is no obvious light sources within the maze it is lit with an ambient white light.
Sealed:
Kagami's sealed state is much like a normal katana. Its handle is silver wrapped in a white cloth and its guard is a very reflective silver, almost mirror like. The guard is circular, split into four equal sections by creases in the metal. The blade is made of the same reflective steel, allowing it to effectively look around corners and reflect light for a signal. If compared to any other katana one would find that Kagami's blade is slightly shorter than its normal counterparts.
Kagami's Sheath is of a plain black with a white cloth wrapped around the top to aid in attaching it to the wielder's waist. The most curious part of the sheath is that it is an inch or two shorter than the sword itself. This additional space allows the sword to be drawn quicker than a full-length sword.
Shikai
Activation Phrase:
Blind Them, Kagami!
Appearance:
Kagami’s blade turns to a mirrored metal the same shape as the sealed form and the guard fans out in four directions to form a larger square that funnels down into the glass handle. When the guard folds open the inside of the handle can be seen through a glass container and it glows with a white light. The outside of the handle changes to a silver colour and it glows slightly from the light inside of it. Kagami is held and wielded just like a normal Zanpaktou in its initial release.
As well as this change, a small mirror appears upon the back of Shirai’s left hand. This mirror can be used as a shield to deflect blows but its main use is to control the mirror shards in his Shatter ability. While in Shikai Shirai fights with his mirrored blade forward and the small mirror behind as he does not use it as a shield normally.
Abilities:
Flash! : Upon command, Kagami lets out a bright white light that blinds those who look upon it for one post. This light can easily be avoided if you know it is coming by simply looking away or closing your eyes. This ability is activated the moment Shikai is called upon as well. Flash uses very little reiatsu and can be used many times during a battle. However, it takes time for the light to build up within the handle once more and Flash can not be used again for two posts.
Opponents of two classes lower than him are blinded for longer by the more powerful reiatsu, five posts, and those two classes higher are completely unaffected by the light.
Shatter! : Upon command, Kagami’s blade splits into a dozen shards that are controlled by Shirai. Each of these shards is mirrored and can cut the opponent. Individually they will not cause as much damage as the Zanpakuto but their main purpose is to facilitate Shoot. When in shatter mode Flash can still be used, light projects from the broken shards as opposed to the blade. In this mode Flash can only be used about a dozen times in the battle. When the mirrored blade is shattered the glowing energy held within the handle appears.
Shoot! : Shoot is Kagami’s main form of attack in Shatter mode. The handle fires off a concentrated beam of reiatsu that is slightly more powerful than a normal swing from his Zanpakuto but it is faster and is shot at a range. This attack will reflect when it strikes any shards of blade that are floating about from Kagami’s Shatter. At the moment the most deflections that can be made are two, this will double once he is skilled enough to unleash his Bankai. Once the maximum number of deflections is made, the energy simply dissipated. This attack can be used around 20 times in a fight before he can not use it anymore. Once he runs out of Shoot and he is sure he is not going to use Charge Shot anymore he can revert Kagami to her sealed form to let his unshattered form recharge. After two posts he can re summon Kagami in her whole released form but is unable to shatter her once more.
Charge Shot! : Charge Shot is very similar to Kagami’s normal shoot but much more powerful and slower. Charge Shot has a charge up time and strength similar to that of a Cero from a hollow of similar power to himself. The Charge shot can also be reflected off the shattered pieces of Zanpakuto in the same manner as shoot. Charge shot takes up about 20% of the user’s reiatsu and is only used when necessary, it takes one post of charging the attack before he can unleash it, but he is not stuck in one place to do so and can continue moving but no other attacks can be made.
Bankai
Not achieved, yet.
Activation Phrase: Bankai! Kagami Yoroi! (Mirror Armour!)
Appearance:
If Kagami was in its Shatter mode when Bankai is called the mirror shards are recalled to land upon Shirai’s body. If they were unshattered the blade breaks apart then reattaches to Shirai. The shards then expand to cover Shirai in full body armour made of mirrors. This armour covers his entire body but the mirrors interact in such a way that they do not hamper movement, if two plates would hit, one just fuses into the other. His mouth and eyes are the only open skin in the armour and his helmet is rounded and ends in a point below his mouth. The small mirror on his left arm grows into a respectable round shield that he can use to parry attacks. The light blade that exists under the mirrored blade then starts to flare as the reiatsu powering it strengthens.
Abilities:
Kagami Yoroi’s first main trait is its increase in the defense and protection of the user. The armour is dense and is resistant to most types of attacks. It does increase the user’s strength and speed as well but those increases are slight.
Blade of Light : In Bankai Kagami's blade extends into a blade of light that acts just like a Zanpaktou in every way but it gives off a soft white light.
Reflection : Kagami Yoroi has the ability to absorb and reflect kido-based attacks. This reflection can be used ten times in one encounter, to reflect a kido based attack of more powerful opponent costs an additional use up to two classes above. Three or more classes higher cannot be reflected.
(It is possible to create a weak point in the armour by striking it with a powerful physical attack, causing the mirror to break. The point of the broken mirror then cannot reflect attacks and the defense on that area would also be lower.)
Shoot & Charge Shot! : Within Bankai Shirai may use Shoot and Charged Shot from his Shikai form, Charge Shot only takes 10% of his reiatsu while in Bankai. It is to note that he does not have the Shatter shards to reflect the attacks so they are pretty straightforward in this form.
Sundering Light : Shirai plunges his sword of light into his shield and can fire either his Charged Shot or Shoot from any point on his body that the mirror covers instead of out of the blade itself. For example, the shots could appear from his back as opposed to firing from straight ahead of him. While the sword is in his shield, he cannot use the sword and he is unable to use Shoot or Charge Shot the turn after he pulls the weapon from the shield.
Bright Explosion! : Kagami Yoroi’s last ditch effort. Absorbing light into its mirrors, Kagami Yoroi releases the energy back out as well as all the energy left in the Bankai into an explosion of light and energy. This explosion expands in a number of meters equal to 15 – the number of posts Shirai was in Bankai for. The damage the attack causes is devastating to those who do not guard against or dodge it. A person on equal footing to Shirai would be knocked out from the sheer force of the attack. After using this attack, Shirai is reverted to his Shikai form and is unable to reenter Bankai for an hour at minimum. He is severely weakened by using this attack that if it does not hit, he would surely lose against anyone it does not effect.
(Side Note: When he first gets his Bankai he will be unable to control it and when he activates it, it will immediately go into the Bright Explosion and revert him to his Shikai. It will be aggravating and amusing, after all, learning a Bankai is never easy.)
Kidou
[4] White Lightning - Fires a concentrated bolt of from the caster's finger.
[31] Shot of Red Fire - Fires a ball of red energy at the target
[33] Blue Fire, Crash Down - Fires a burst of blue spiritual energy at a target in a similar manner to 31, but over a wider area and with more power.
[63] Thunder Roar Cannon - Fires a massive wave of yellow energy at a target.
[63] Twin Lotus blue Fire, Crash Down - Essentially a doubled version of #33, this spell fires two shots of blue fire with greater potency than the single-shot variety. This spell is equally as difficult to cast and control as Raikōhō, therefore they both share the same number.
Bakudo:
[9] Strike- When cast this kido sends a concentrated orb of red light toward the target at amazing speeds, and if it hits engulfs them in a blinding light that paralyzes all their bodily functions for a short period depending on their overall strength.
[61] Six Rods of Prison Light - Summons six thin, but wide, beams of light that slam into a target's midsection, holding them in place. A moving target is hard to hit with this kido, but one standing still is a near guaranteed hit due to its amazing speed. However for a level 60 kido it is fairly weak, anyone stronger than the user would be able to break out of it if given some time.
[21] Alarm – Creates a translucent barrier around a battlefield. Anybody passing through the barrier will cause the caster to know exactly where the penetration took place. The barrier can be placed around one city block at maximum. Anybody searching for a barrier or with a good sense of reiatsu can sense the barrier’s location.
Incantation: Let all those who would trespass upon this location be known. Bakudo Number 21, Alarm.

I was a quiet day from Shirai, his day off. Well, that is until he unknowingly agreed to spar with a member of his Division. What a drag, he thought he would have time to go out for a drink but it was not meant to be. As he sat in the training circle waiting he looked over at Kagami who was floating next to him. “So, what do you think of Zenko?” He questioned her, obvious that he was not going to get any useful reply.
“What do you think of him?” She replied in her usual manner, her expression unchanged.
“Thought you’d say that.” He muttered to himself. “I suppose we will see how well he uses that companion of his in battle. I have heard stories that it is a dangerous fire type Zanpaktou… goes by the name Ignis if I remember correctly.” He said, knowing that at this point he was merely talking to himself, but he felt secure that he was not crazy because Kagami was actually there, just no one could see her. Talking to an invisible and intangible entity might be called crazy in the real world, but around here its more common than you would think.
At that moment Zenko entered. He was a taller Shinigami with black hair and a serious look. He was here on a mission to show up a person of a higher rank and he looked it. He walked in while drawing his Zanpaktou and looked to Shirai. “Are you ready?” He said and waited for a moment before dashing towards Shirai, unsheathing his sword.
Shirai sighed and drew Kagami quickly and blocked the obvious frontal attack. “Note one, it is polite to show honour to your partner before you strike.” He said, pushing forward to knock Zenko off as he jumped backward moving his hand out. “Kidou number 4, White Lightning!” He called out, the electricity arcing from his hand out towards his enemy, his fingers warming up as the attack lashed out.
Zenko brought his Zanpaktou up to block as he called out. “Sunder, Ignis!” He called out, fire whirling out from his blade and absorbing the Kidou fired at him. “You will not win Shirai… not this time!” He yelled out, dashing forward again, but unlike last time he called out his attack. “Incinerate him!” The flames from his blade lashed out at Shirai, the flames becoming hot and the fire forming deadly tendrils that reached for him.
Shirai smirked, he saw this attack before and unless Zenko was going to be more creative it was not going to work this time either. “Blind Them, Kagami!” He called out, a bright white flash of light bursting out from his weapon as it shimmered its new mirror like coat. As the light was fading Shirai was moving, now that the flames were not directed his enemy would have to focus on his reiatsu to catch him, not an easy feat for a fifth seat. As he moves up and back he calls to his Zanpaktou. “Shatter!” He calls out, the blade of Kagami splitting into pieces and moving about, his new sword of light appearing from underneath. Instead of attacking for this moment, Shirai was more concentrated on keeping out of Ignis’ deadly flames.
Zenko lashed around with the flames, unable to see Shirai properly. He kept still and tried to pinpoint his Reiatsu and as soon as he found it, he lashed his Zanpaktou out at Shirai, those searing hot flames reaching for him.
“Bakudo Number 61, Six Rods of Prison Light!” Shirai called out as soon as Zenko stopped his movement. ‘Poor thing forgot to keep moving. Being blind he has to be more aware than that.’ Shirai thought to himself as the six beams of light appeared around Zenko and quickly began to move in on him. Just in case, Shirai Moves his left arm that is controlling his mirror shard in a way that the dozen shards surround Zenko in case he gets out of the way of the binding. However, his own movements were not quick enough and his legs were lashed with the flames of Ignis, burning quickly before he jumped back.
Zenko’s vision came back a second too late, the Bakudo effectively containing him and he has lost the match from this. Ignis reverted back to it sealed state. “I yield…” He says to himself dejected.
Shirai sheathed his weapon, the effects of his Shikai disappearing as he dismissed the Bakudo. “Keep training, perhaps you will get stronger.” He said, looking strong but the burns on his legs might need to be looked at. ‘I wish he would stop challenging me… I don’t really want to fight him and he pushes hard to win. I wish we could all just get along.’ He thought to himself, walking out of the training area and looking up at Kagami who was floating beside him. “Don’t you?”

Zanpakuto
Shinigami Techniques
