Appearance:
Shu is a tall man, standing about 5' 11". He has a willowy frame, being as he is only about 145 lbs, and as such he often looks as if the wind is twisting his body. He stands with a slight slouch much of the time, adding to the twisting in the breeze effect. He is however not just a frame of bones. He is all sinewy muscle, and it is corded over his arms and gives him a deceptive appearance. He has no excess fat at all, his body simply is, a few light criss-crossing scars cover his chest and arms. Though he looks like a strong wind will blow him away he is deceptively firm.
Shu has dark sandy brown hair that is kept relatively short. It comes up to the tops of his ears and leaves most of his forehead bare. His hair is often sloppy and unkept, as much as it can be since it is short. His hair leads down to a forehead with several wrinkle lines in it. Moving downward Shu has dark brown almost black eyes. They are half slits most of the time given that Shu is often smiling. Shu's nose has a slight crook in it from some accident or battle. Moving on down his face to his mouth, his perfectly white teeth can easily be seen. Shu is almost constantly smiling to some degree or another, and his mouth has suffered the effects. It is rather wide and around it are tons of wrinkles from smilng so much. His teeth are perfectly straight, and he is often considered handsome because of his smile.
Shu wears the traditional shinigami robes and wears his zanpakuto on his lower back with the hilt facing to his left side. However, his robes are fitted so that they fit slimmer/tighter than most. This is due to his slenderness. He also wears the sleeves cut up above the elbow. :
Personality:
Shu's smile is not simply a guise or quirk that he has, it comes from a general love of life, vitality and those around him. His smile is everpresent, and he even has a quirk of the lips during battle. Shu is a jokester and a romantic, seemingly either joking or flirting with those around him. However, he is rather serious and observant, often noticing small details while he is is distracting others.
Shu loves his squad and is always there for them, he is a leader and listener, always taking into account the others around him, even while taking charge. Shu makes his subordinates feel welcome and comfortable, often with his jokes. Shu keeps his mind and his door open for his squadmates, always willing to talk and help anyone who comes to him.
Outside of his squad, Shu is easygoing, laidback and quite lazylike in nature. He can often be found laying about and simply off doing his own thing. He is not a duty shirker, rather he makes sure all of his duties are done before he goes off to his leisurely duties. Shu can often be found by himself away from the limelight. He enjoys making others happy when they are around, but when he is alone or taking his own time, he often reads, naps, takes slow walks on his own. Shu's most enjoyable activities involve being by himself, or simlpy giving himself time to recharge.
In battle Shu is relentless, fierce, and rutheless. His brain calculates quickly and he reacts instantly, and most often with a suitable reaction. His smile stays in place in battle, because for some dark side, some primal area left in his soul Shu loves to fight. Shu sometimes wonders wether or not the 11th division might not have been better for him. A fire ignites in Shu whenever he gets the change to enter battle. His jokes are often a cover for the beginning of a battle as he feels out his opponent, but once they stop, he is ready to truly start his battle.
Shu is a rather simple man at heart, he enjoys his quiet time, as well as being around people. His training is important to him, but he makes sure to balance himself out. He specifically enjoys pecan cookies, as well as harboring a secret love for cooking. He often leaves treats and secret snacks around the Seireitei as a way to let loose his little addiction. His love for food is a slight conundrom because of his slenderness. Shu loves honesty as well as consistency from people. He has a small pentient for drinking sake, but he is a bit of a lite weight, and such tries to limit his consumption as best he can.
Shu absolutely hates wasted time, but this is not to be construed to leisure time. He feels that relaxing is time well spent as it helps people recharge and come back to work better prepared to do their duty. What Shu feels is wasted time, is when jobs need to be done and they aren't. Shu harbors a secret distaste for the Rukongai, and its poorer inhabitants. While he protects them, he resents that alot of its inhabitants are hesitant and often hateful towards Shinigami. He tries to understand the difference, but he just cannot quite seperate the feelings. As such he sometimes feels conflicted in his defense of the Seireitei, but his friends help him through it.
History:
Shu's history is quite enigmatic and somewhat strange in nature. It is not sure if Shu was ever "alive" as a human or not. Records are not kept and since there are so many souls travelling to the afterlife, Shu could either have been a human, or have come into existence by means of birth in the Seireitei. Clouded in this mystery it is hard to say exactly how Shu came into being, and how he came to be a child in the Rukongai. Shu was never an orphan per say, he did not grow up in the poorer districts. He always had what he called a mother and father, even if they let him run around as he wished, and rarely reprimanded him. Shu had a close knit set of friends in his section of the Rukongai, which was close to the gates of the Seireitei. He and his friends would often wonder about life on what they called "the inside", and would spend their days making up adventures and plans to sneak inside those walls.
However, each plan was more ridiculous than the next; they started with trying to dig a tunnel under the wall, then graduated to trying to catapult over the wall. Each attempt was laughable, and they treated them as such. The boys used their time to simply exist, they had no worries, no problems, they had plenty of water, the only sustenance they needed, and they could easily play and just do what they pleased.
As time passed the boys grew to young men. Their friendship grew, as well as their pentaint for mischeif. As young men they grew restless, not realizing the life that they had. They were always scheming on how to become a royal member, or how to get rich, or simply lift themselves above everyone else. As time went on the boys began to scheme in secret against each other, trying to gain the advantage over each other.
Now here is where the strange and mysterious part of Shu's past comes into play. The scheming was very secretive, and simply started as friendly "jabs" at each other. None of it seemed strange at first, just boys being boys, but as the jabs continued and became worse, resentment began to grow amonst the crew. Shu was not immune to these schemes, no matter how he tried to avoid them. One of the members of his band, Kaze, had a particular talent for drawing Shu into his plans.
Before continuing with Shu's exact history it only seems fair to introduce the other members of his band of friends, since they play the biggest part of his early life. First there is the aforementioned Kaze. This boy is the "brains" of the outfit, he often came up with the most plausable of the impossible schemes. He is short only standing about 5' 4" tall, but he has a wrestler's build. He is short but built wide, he could easily have been a blacksmith's apprentice in another time. He has prematurly grey hair, a feature that makes him the butt of many jokes. Kaze is rather relaxed and calculating, often staying in the back abit to watch others.
Second is Akane, a deeply passionate boy who wore his emotions on his sleeves. Akane is an average sized boy in every way, he stands about 5' 8" and is a middle of the road build. He is always the most talkative, and the most likely to express his feelings. He feels that his way is right most of the way, and this often causes conflict within the group. Akane has light red hai.
Third and finally is Isamu, and he is the the soul of this young group. Isamu, is the quintessential protoypical boy. He is tall gangly, the peeks of a handsome man poking through his boyish figures. He is also the protoypical man in the fact that he is about 30% brave and 70% stupid, with 100% luck it seems like. Isamu was always the boy who actually tried the impossible, he tried to rise above the rest, and was the first to fall.
Now that the crew has all been seen, the truth, or at least what can be determined from past events, can be seen (but be warned only Shu himself knows what truly happened, this is only as it seems to everyone). The boys at this point have begun to come loose at the seems. Their history and lives keep them together for the moment, but rifts are beginning to form. The part we truly wish to look at begins on a sunny day in the Rukongai.
The boys are walking along the wall to the Seirietei, and the boys are talking up their latest half hearted attempt to make themselves better. Shu and Akane are ahead of the other two talking and laughing about the schemes ahead of them. At this point Kaze and Isamu are not talking, thier plots for advancement have taken them beyond true friendship and into the realm of kiniving deception.
The day was flawless. The sun shone high, and the trees were in bloom, blossoms drifted across the path. The warm of the sun had caused the boys to take of theirs shirts and often run for short bursts of time. For a short period all seemed to be perfect and as of old. But dark times were ahead, and the first unknown event occured. The boys were headed around to an area under renovation. The idea was that since it was under construction, entrance would be easier. However, obviously the shinigami were keeping the area under careful observation. The interesting part of this idea is that Kaze was the one that suggested the idea. As they moved toward the site, Akane slipped and fell. What happened next is clouded in the boys' explanations but it seems Akane's fall caused his death at the site, however his body could not be found .
Obviously there was general sadness over the death of Akane, but no investigation was mounted and the incident was left at an unfortunate accident. The general story the boys told was that of an accident, so why should anything else be true? However, both Shu and Isamu held their individual doubts about the incident. Shu was never certain about the events that transpired, but he remembers Kaze urging himself and Akane ahead. Could Kaze have planned it, could he have killed Akane? Isamu had no doubts he "knew" Kaze did it somehow.
This event formed the rift in this deplited group of boys. Their exploits died out, they grew apart, and not much is know about Shu's life until he came into the academy. A background search revealed that both Isamu and Kaze had died a several years after Akane's death. Nothing else of importance happened in Shu's previous life, so it was left alone. However, this mystery causes curiosity in some shinigami from time to time.
Academy:
Upon entering the academy Shu quickly left behind his old life. He quickly became a popular person among his peers, atleast in a social setting. Shu was a prime target in classes, because of his popularity, and the shadowy circumstances of his arrival at the academy. Initially he took several beatings in his classes, but as he trained and focused on how he was defeated, Shu slowly improved his skills. Eventually, his opponents felt the force of his blows, and felt the crushing resolve of a man determined to better himself. And, while he never mastered any one aspect of his training to the level of some other students, he became a proficient in all of them to a very similar degree.
Shu's fondest memory of his days in the academy came when he learned the name of his zanpakuto. The day was overcast, a rather down day in the Seireitei. The wind whipped in irratic burst and rain threatened to burst forth and drown everyone. Shu sat on the outskirts of the forest in silent meditation, his zanpakuto sitting in his lap. The overall features of Shu are there, but he is much younger with some softer features not yet ironed out by years of work and experience as a true shinigami. His hair is a little longer and the wind whips it out of his face. Inside of his mind though there is a torrent of action, contrasting the calmness of Shu's outer body.
*Shu is running, running, running, up the deep corridor. It is cold, so cold, he must get to the sun to the warmth.
do you feel it? can you say it yet?
Shu is confused, the voice, the tempting voice. Why is he cold? A flash, an image, a giant green snake banded in black with a square head. His eyes burn like emaralds.
<You....You....I know who you are.....>
Then say my name, you know it NOW SAY IT!!
< You....you are...you are...>
Shu is still running his mind is ablaze, the cold is taking over its almost time to give up when suddenly the name comes to him a dazzling burst of clarity, that brings him into the sunlight, the warm the world
<Dagekihebikiba>
Shu opened his eyes to bear witness to his zanpakuto.....*
From this point on Shu was even more devoted to his labors to become a great Shinigami. Eventually Shu graduated from the academy, and was appointed to the nineth division where he made his way up through the ranks.

The weapon can be thrown and the chains uncoil so that Shu has some control of the weapon even when it is in flight. When the zanpakuto is held it is more of a defensive weapon, since the blades are so short, hand to hand is more difficult on the offensive side, but the lighter shorter weapon is great for defense.

The size, depth, and amount of cuts effect the strength of this ability. A small wound has a smaller amount of pain, while a large deep wound has a much worse effect. Numerous small cuts can eventually lead to a more dibilitating effect.
When the air escapes it causes pain at the site, so more wounds means more areas of pain, and the deeper the wound (stab or deep slash) cause a larger area inside the body to be effected as well. This ability inherint in the zanpakuto and requires no phrase or extra work by Shu.

The morning sunlight shone brightly over the walls of the Seireitei. It penetrated deeply into even the most hidden of crevices and spilled light onto everything. This day was going to be one to remember as the sun rose triumphantly to takes its rightful place in the sky. But, Shu Ranpu was not enjoying the sunlight like many of his other counterparts.
Shu sat in his office in the nineth division barracks. His windows were open to let in the glorious light and refreshing breeze. Books crowded the corners and free spaces of the rooom, was well as papers with large weights to keep them from flying out of the window. And while the room looked as if it was a clutter, there was a sense of ease and form to it. There were nice paths in the books for people to walk, and around the desk and Shu himself there was ample space.
Shu sat quietly smiling down at his work for the day. His hair was a mess and his robes ruffled and looking like they'd been slept in, but his face shone brightly as he quickly moved through the paperwork mounds around him.
<<Stupid paperwork, why is it always the heaviest on the nice days?>> Shu contemplated as he quickly filled in another form. His mind was elsewhere, on all the things he could be doing, and he tried to make sure his work kept its normal pace, but it was tough going. The outdoors called to him, but he percerviered onward in his duty.
Suddenly, three quick raps came from his door, then a fellow "niner" stepped in
" Im sorry to bother you but there is a situation..." the shinigami trailed off
<<What kind of situation?>> Shu asked though he already had a clue
"We need to quickly recapture and execute an escaped convict, he is holed up in the 45th district at the moment"
Shu sighed to himself then quickly gathered up his zanpakuto, << Looks like I get to go outside after all>>
