Vizard
Name: Edwin Foxfield
Gender: Male
Age: 413, Appears to be around 26
Ranking: 2nd Seat on the Council
Physical Description: If one were to describe how intimidating Edwin looked, one may compare him to a paper bag, which is to say, he is not very intimidating at all. He has a soft, round face, pale, the kind of face one would expect to sun burn after 10 minutes of being outside. His chin is not pronounced, barely sticking out enough to be considered a chin. Likewise, his cheek bones are neither high nor noticeable. His eyes are small and narrow, a soft green color bordered by red, aggravated looking eyelids, a likely cause being a lack of restful sleep. His nose is average in size, straight and angled, clearly it has avoided ever having been broken. Edwin’s mouth too, is average in size; his lips, slightly on the thin side, are a shade redder than the normal hue for a Caucasian, and his teeth are bright white, although very slightly crooked.
Edwin’s hair is a dark shade of brown, although when in directly sunlight it becomes apparent he has quite a bit of red scattered throughout it. His hair comes down just at shoulder level; flat, thin, messy, can easily sum up its look, although unintentionally it stylishly flips at its ends. Not much for combing it, in the mornings Edwin will push his bangs behind his ears, and they always fall back to frame his face. He has a full, but trim beard adorning his face.
Edwin stands about 6ft even, weighing in just around 210lbs. His shoulders are a bit on the broad side, though not overly much, and are generally in a bit of a slouch. A large man, not particularly muscular looking, nor entirely in shape looking; his build detracts from his intimidation factor, and can cause opponents to underestimate him. His hands are not particularly large, though his fingers are a bit long; his nails are very short and slightly jagged (the most likely culprit for his bad nails is his habit of biting them constantly). The only scars he has are on his left arm, many claw marks, some look like they’ve been there for decades, and are faded, while others look only a month or two old.
Never trading comfort for style, Edwin’s clothing is pretty simple. He wears button down dress shirts, usually white or black; if not a dress shirt, he can be found in a floral pattern button down of some kind. His shirts are never tucked in, and he always leaves the first two buttons un buttoned. His pants are always cargo pants which are dark green, black, or khaki. His shoes are a pair of warn black tennis shoes whose strings are so frayed they cannot be tied properly, with the shoes he never wares socks. In colder months he can be found wearing a dark brown bomber jacket. He wears a pair of circular thin framed glasses, which, other than helping him see, serve the purpose of detracting even more from his intimidation factor.
Personality Emotionally stable is perhaps the best way to describe Edwin. On average he is a kind man, never one to say something bad about anyone…at least anyone who did not deserve the comment. He always has a relaxed air about him, from his manner of speech, to the way he carries himself. Edwin always seems relaxed, whether sitting or standing, he is always slouched, as if he is so comfortable he could fall asleep right then and there, and his personality is equally relaxed.
Edwin is the first to laugh at any joke, but never one to tell one himself, mainly because he cannot seem to tell one that is not horribly lame or sick (Although he will be overly sarcastic sometimes in jest). He never requires any one refer to him with any honorifics, and likes those below him to have a relaxed mood around him. That being said, Edwin is never disrespectful to anyone, although sometimes his easy demeanor and lack of using titles has been taken as disrespect.
He is fiercely protective of those he cares about, though not restrictively so. If a dear friend goes to fight a battle Edwin does not think they can win, he won’t stop them, but will follow them and watch, jumping in to save them if need be. He only really can get sad at the loss of friends. Widespread genocide warrants no more than a “That kind of sucks” from him, and then he won’t spare it another thought. If he loses a friend, he will be in a depressed slump for the next 3 or 4 days. After these few days of being out of commission, Edwin will be right back to normal again.
To Edwin, patience is a virtue. He does not react without thinking things through, and does not even give his opinion on things lightly. He almost never overreacts to anything, and can keep a cool head in almost every situation, though often he will sarcastically overreact at taunts from opponents; this is one thing he seems to get a real kick out of. He tends to think people who are volatile or just way to serious are hilarious, and will always make an attempt to lighten them up a little.
While he does not think overly high of himself, Edwin also does not have any major self esteem problems. He is well aware of his powers and faults and likes to play it cautious. He is a fairly intelligent individual, having gathered quite a bit of book smarts over the years, and his street smarts are pretty decent too. However, often he will seem unobservant, the kind of person who smacks into pull doors while trying to push them open, this is mostly because he is usually so wrapped up in his own thoughts, he can’t be bothered to pay much attention to the world around him.
In combat, Edwin is very much the same as he is out of combat; he is relaxed and at ease towards his adversary. As at ease as he is however, in a life or death struggle Edwin does not believe honor matters. If an enemy decides to bow to him before a battle, Edwin will simply attack while he bows. If Edwin does get angry in combat (generally if someone he cares about is actually in danger) he tends to get sloppy, were many fighters are better when they are angry Edwin is not.
Edwin has many likes and few dislikes. While he doesn’t like alcohol, he does like going out for drinks with friends, he simply isn’t the one who gets drunk. He enjoys reading, and has tried to keep up with all the literature changes through his long afterlife. He hangs around the Vizard Compound, though he likes to go out and meet any new Reiatsu sources who show up in the surrounding area, be they hollow, arrancar, shinigami, or quincy. He is also an avid Falconer, and has been since before he died. However, more often than not he can be in his quarters trying to sleep. Edwin enjoys the water, and while he can’t swim he does enjoy watching it or being on it in a boat. He also is a fan of the cold, not able to stand much above 70 without complaining at least slightly that it is too hot.
His biggest love is probably food, which, ironically enough, he is incredibly picky about. He likes simple food, single dish things that don’t have lots of vegetables thrown in. It’s when people feel the need that a dish needs more ‘substance’ and starts throwing in all sorts of random things that Edwin starts gagging. He is big on meat, and sweets, and noodles, though only if they are cooked in a simple broth. He has an odd habit of mixing sweet things with melted cheese, he finds the taste a good combination, but other than that; there is nothing to outlandish about his taste.
Edwin enjoys listening to other people tell stories, and in turn enjoys telling them. In general Edwin likes to talk with people, to get to know them, and tell them about him. For some reason he gets a kick out of the whole process. He would like to marry one day, being a rather odd romantic, but he can’t much seem to find people he’s interested in that way.
Edwin has no dislike of hollows; they are simply creatures, like everything else, trying to get by. He will defend himself if attacked, but will generally just scare them off over kill them. He finds arrancar fascinating, since they are the antithesis of what he is, and would very much like to get to know members of the race (specifically, he is dying to ask if they have some sort of equivalent to the inner hollow of the Vizards). Shinigami too, he has no real qualms towards. If they feel it’s their duty to purify hollows, than they should go right ahead and get on with that is the stance he takes. He does show favoritism to Vizards though, since he understands what they are, and what each one has to go through in terms of dealing with inner hollows, his whole reason for wanting to become a Council member was to help the most Vizards he could.
Edwin does not like children, or teenagers. Well, actually, it’s more accurate to say he doesn’t like people who act with the maturity level of children, or especially average ‘just hit puberty know it all’ teenagers. While he won’t be outwardly any different in treatment of people like that then anyone else, he may subtly try to force people who think they know it all into admitting they don’t know something, savoring whatever slight tinge of humiliation they may feel. He does not like fire. In fact, he hates it, and is slightly pyrophobic. He does not freeze up around fire, but he is unnerved by it, and an opponent using large amounts of fire would have an advantage over him.
History:
The Living Years
Boring, dull, not worthy of note, these are the words Edwin would use to describe his early years of life, and for the most part, it is an accurate description.
Edwin Foxfield was born to Cecilia Connor in the outskirts of London. Cecilia was a half Irish woman who at the time was a practitioner of the world’s oldest profession; Edwin was just the product of one of the hazards of the job. Edwin’s mom made decent money; she was a good looking woman and knew how to lure men in, so despite his rather accidental beginnings, his childhood wasn’t harder than the average.
When he was 12, an inn keeper took pity on him and his mother. The old man offered them a permanent room and 3 meals a day if
Edwin worked the tables, feed travelers horses, and in general kept the inn tidy. Edwin agreed, not that he really wanted to do the work (especially dealing with the horse stalls) but he did want to be able to keep his mother from needing to sell herself, so he accepted the position.
Edwin learned a lot from the different patrons of the inn, including how to read and write English. Reading became his secret obsession, print was rare commodity, so whenever someone in the inn had a piece of written word, Edwin would do anything it took to read it. He also learned how to get people to open up, to tell him their stories and tell him of their travels. This was one of his favorite parts of the job, for he got to hear of great places and amazing feats he would never get to see or do.
As Edwin grew older, he and his mother stayed close. She taught him what all a man shouldn’t be, which was pretty much everything her clients were, and Edwin took it to heart. Being around barflies, prostitutes, and old grumpy tavern keepers Edwin did not learn proper etiquette, but he did learn how to be respectful in spite of that, and rather unfortunately, developed a rather disgusting sense of humor, which he keeps to himself now.
When he was 17 years old the inn caught on fire, a common occurrence in those days, and while he escaped, his mother and the owner did not. This was his first rather bad encounter with fire, but it would not be the last. Using what money he had, he traveled for a bit, in till eventually he got a job as a deckhand on an East India Trading Company vessel. The work was hard, but well worth the opportunity to travel the world and to be on the open ocean.
On his third voyage, a now 20 year old Edwin found their destination to be Japan. In preparation, he had one of the missionaries they were transporting teach him the basics of Japanese(the missionary had learned in preparation for spreading the Lord’s word). He loved the language, and was able to learn all the missionary knew during the voyage, and once in Japan he did his best to learn more.
The voyage to Japan proved to be much more dangerous than his others had been, and by the time he was there, he was all but done with the East India Trading Company. He offered his services as a translator to the daimyo of the port town, requesting very little in terms of pay. The daimyo, impressed by how quickly he had picked up the language, hired him, and for 2 years Edwin served the lord of the town.
The daimyo taught him many things, and invited him frequently on his falconry expeditions, which over time developed into Edwin’s favorite past time. By the time he was 23, Edwin knew the language and the daimyo well enough, that he could almost speak word for word what the daimyo was saying at the exact moment he was saying it.
However, life always must come to an end, and Edwin’s ended just as he was thinking he had the perfect life. While on board a trading ship, bringing word of welcome from the daimyo, a Portuguese saboteur set off the gunpowder. The resulting explosion did not leave Edwin dead at first, and he held on to life for several hours, screaming in agony from the burns he had received. After this point, fire and Edwin never mixed well.
His spirit lingered in the living world, not willing to say goodbye to his friends and his life. He watched in extreme despair as every attempt he made to interact with his daimyo, or with the servants he had grown fond of, or anyone at all, ended in failure. For 3 months he wallowed in a depressed state, constantly trying to interact with those they knew, and during that time, his chain of fate ate itself vigorously.
While wandering around the town he once lived in, Edwin was attacked by a hollow. It chased him for many hours, in till finally a person in black clothing with a sword slew the bestial creature. Edwin hid from the Shinigami, for all he knew; the Shinigami would be just as bad as the hollow.
While hiding he all of a sudden came under tremendous pain, as his chain devoured its own last link. As a hole in chest started to form he realized what he was becoming, a hollow like the thing that had attacked him. Edwin didn’t want that, and he struggled with it as long as he could. Eventually it felt as though he was winning the fight, but as he got that feeling, everything went black.
Rukongai and the Academy
Edwin awoke in Rukongai’s 33rd District, and it was there he stayed for 3 years. They were relatively easy years; the 33rd District was pretty safe, and he had found a place much like a tavern that he could work at. He noticed one thing different about himself when compared to the other souls around him, where they could get by on only water, and never seemed to get hungry, he did get hungry. He kept it to himself, just pretending that he only ate for the taste. He didn’t know what was wrong with him that he had to eat, but he didn’t want to get out-casted if people found out.
One day, in his third year in Rukongai, a girl stopped into the place he worked to get food before continuing on her way. Edwin, having been trained most his life to talk to people, be it at a bar, or as a translator, asked where she was going. The girl said that she was going to take the Shinigami Academy entrance exam, because she had spiritual pressure.
Edwin ended up accompanying the girl named Nohime to the Academy, for she explained that only souls with spiritual power get hungry. They both passed the exam and were admitted into the academy. Very quickly it became apparent what Nohime and Edwin’s strengths were. Where Nohime excelled at Zanjutsu, Edwin was very focused on Kido. The two frequently sparred, and for the most part were even in combat. It was during one of these spars that Edwin first came to think that there might be something different about him than other shinigami.
Dawn was just breaking over the training ground as the group of friends gathered there like they usually did ever week. They had been gathering there every week ever since they first got their Zanpakutos and learned their first spells to practice against each other in duals. The first match of the day that week was also the most anticipated one, for the two who were going to dual were the most advanced of the group of friends.
Edwin and Nohime took their respective positions about 10 yards from each other. The wind was blowing lightly, barley breaking the silence that had fallen over the training field. Nohime was the first to act, drawing her Zanpakuto, a nodachi she wore on her back, and jumping at her opponent.
Edwin quickly pulled his tachi; the scraping noise of it running along its sheath was barley past when the clang of Nohime’s sword against it echoed in the air. Edwin’s hand shook as Nohime put more pressure down on his blade. “Nice timing Ed, I thought I was gonna’ have to stop before lopping your arms off.”
“Sorry I worried you” Edwin said with a grin, opening his left hand so his palm was pointing to Nohime’s chest. “Bakudo 1, Restrain!” Nohime growled as her sword moved off his and her arms headed for her back. Edwin jumped back a few feet, and as he landed Nohime was already coming at him again. Damn I thought that would by a little more time he thought as he raised he blocked her next attack.
Again and again the clashing of swords echoed across the grounds as Edwin barely managed to block Nohime’s attacks. She came at him again, bringing her sword at him with a heavy swing to his left, which he just barely blocked, his sword at an awkward upside down angle. However this was just the opportunity he was looking for.
“Hado 33…” Edwin began, and Nohime’s face went pale as she lightened the pressure she was applying to his sword. Edwin quickly took the opportunity to slash at her leg as she jumped back a good couple yards.
“I knew you couldn’t cast a 33, ‘specially not with Eishohaki.” She spat as she pushed some of her silver hair behind her ear.
“Did you? Huh, I was still able to cut you though.” Edwin said playfully, pointing to a cut that was just below Nohime’s right knee. Some of the others in the group cheered at first blood being drawn, but Nohime’s face went cold, she hated losing, even to her best friend. With a yell she charged at him quickly, much fast than any of them has seen her move before. Edwin barley raised his sword, and his grip was completely over powered by Nohime’s swing.
Edwin cursed as pain rung through his hand as his hilt flipped out, the tachi landing a few feet away from him. Nohime immediately raised her nodachi up, and brought the bottom of the hilt down on Edwin’s face. “Gah!” Edwin gasped as he fell backwards on his feet, his nose pouring blood profusely. She missed the glasses thankfully… he thought looking up, seeing Nohime’s ice blue eyes coldly glaring at him. He hated it when she was like this; it made the spars no fun. “Hado 4, Whi..” before he could finish Nohime kicked him on the side of his head, sending him skidding to were his Zanpakuto was and knocking his glasses off in the process.
“Make her feel our pain…” Edwin heard the whisper clearly; as if someone was right next to his ear, glancing around quickly he caught a glimpse of himself in his Zanpakuto’s blade. He shut his eyes quickly and shook his head, That can’t be right, not at all. My glasses are off and my heads ringing, I’m just seeing things.
“Hey Ed, you okay?” Nohime asked walking towards him, she had calmed down once she realized something was wrong with him, her voice full of concern. Edwin opened his eyes again, and looked at his reflection, nothing, it was completely normal.
“I just don’t feel too great…sorry” he said slowly pulling himself up. That wasn’t it, not at all, he knew what he had heard, and despite his own mental protest, he knew what he had saw, his left eye had been black and gold.
Time with the Gotei 13
Graduation came and went, and Edwin found himself in the 7th division thanks to his kido skills. Nohime had gone to 11th squad, and he found he didn’t get to see her much at all. Edwin made quick friends with the other members of his division, and found life relatively good; slowly but surely, he forgot about the incident during that sparring session.
He had one of the seated officers help him learn to communicate with his Zanpakuto, he had a hard time believing that swords had spirits, but he knew there had to be truth to it do to the amazing abilities he had seen the higher ranks use just by saying a command and the name of their sword. In the meantime he also continued to improve his Kido skills, impressing many higher ups in the division with his creative use of some of the lowest spells to be effective.
It took about 15 years, but finally Edwin achieved shikai, it was not a spectacular event, just one day he made contact with his Zanpakuto and that was that. Once his Zanpakuto’s ability was revealed to be entirely healing related, he was invited to become 5th seat of the 4th division, a position he only took after he heard his friend Nohime was killed in battle. His new goal was to keep everyone from having to experience loss the best he could. It was this decision and this goal that lead to him to the day he found out what he truly was.
“Jinsei!” Edwin commanded his Zanpakuto as he stabbed one of its blades into another fallen shinigami. The sword sunk in and dissipated over the fallen man’s body. He was torn up pretty bad, dozens of deep claw marks across his chest, which was now slowly healing. Edwin could hear the battle off in the distance; an Adjuchas was battling against multiple members of 10th division.
Some of the seated officers had arrived, so he had no doubt it would be purified, but he was concerned whether some of the first shinigami on the scene would live. He and his three subordinates who came with him had stopped the bleeding of a few, but he had been running on fumes for the past two, and this one he was healing now was really taking a drain on him.
“Sir, you look terrible.” One of his subordinates said as Edwin’s blade reformed in his hand. Edwin turned to him, his face much paler than before. “Sir, I’ll finish healing him, rest for a moment.” Edwin was to drained to argue, as his shikai returned to its sealed state he leaned against the wall nearby and closed his eyes.
Listening to the sound of battle off in the distance, not even noticing the yell of his subordinates as the hollow was running from its attackers. What he did notice, was when the hollows claws dug deeply into his chest.
All he felt was a tug; he was too drained to actually feel pain at that point. He fell to the ground, blood pouring out of the wounds. He could feel his brain shutting down, he tried to remember if that was what dying felt like, but he couldn’t remember much of anything. His world soon went blank.
He awoke after a few minutes, he could feel his body moving, but he was not moving it, he could hear himself talking, but it wasn’t him willing himself to speak, and he could feel something on his face that certainly hadn’t been there before. As his brain turned back on, he watched as his body slew one of his own subordinates, and he was absolutely horrified. With all of his will and effort focused on it, he reached out with his right hand and clasped the mask over his face; he heard himself screaming as he was trying to pull it off.
“Don’t! The only relief these people can get from suffering is the brief moment of death! What are you doing?!” His vocal chords hurt from all the screaming as he finally tore the mask off, it shattering as he did so. He collapsed again afterword; his body beat and battered his mind in shock over what just happened. He forced himself to stay awake as he heard a person approaching.
The Masked Syndicate or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Hollow.
Edwin was found by a woman named Kitsuno. She explained to him that he was a Vizard, or a shinigami whom also had hollow powers. She said she represented an organization, or rather a family of sorts, whom she was also a member of which was made up of entirely of Vizards. As soon as she said she could make sure what just happened would never happen again, Edwin was all for joining up.
Kitsuno and Edwin trained nearly every day. First she trained Edwin how to control his inner hollow, and then together they trained on achieving their Bankais. They grew close, eventually they became lovers, and both had aspirations to serve on the Vizard Council, Kitsuno because she was a bit of a control freak, and Edwin because he felt the higher up he was, the more Vizards he could help. Kitsuno’s view of the races soon rubbed off on Edwin, not all Hollows were bad per say, and that their job was not to protect humans, but merely to look after those who sat on the fence between the world of hollows and shinigami. Edwin came to the conclusion Vizards should always be his first concern, and everything else on a case by case bases.
70 years of training saw the pair finally achieving Bankai, as Edwin had expected, his Bankai did not lend itself to fighting very well, so he had also been continuing to improve his Kido, it having been his main weapon for as long as he had been a shinigami. He also became particularly fond of his cero, and trained to make liberal use of it.
Despite Edwin’s advisement that she should learn better control of her Bankai first, Kitsuno challenged the 2nd Council Member by the name of Ieyasu. Edwin was not surprised, she was going straight for the highest level of power she thought she could acheive. Ieyasu made it known he would kill any person who challenged him for his position, and he had few challengers because of it. Kitsuno had figured that he would be rusty. Rusty or not, Ieyasu was an experienced Bankai user, were Kitsuno had just learned it, and the fight did not go favorably, resulting in her death.
When Edwin challenged Ieyasu 4 years later, everyone thought it was a calculated revenge plan, but that wasn’t really it, or at the very least, Edwin had convinced himself that wasn’t it. Kitsuno had chosen the fight knowing the consequence, and Ieyasu had given fair warning that he would kill all challengers. Edwin challenged Ieyasu because he didn’t want any other foolish Vizards getting killed in an attempt to take his spot on the council.
Many had come to watch the fight, this really didn’t bother Edwin at all, crowd or not, either way it didn’t affect him. The fight was taking place at a location of Ieyasu’s choosing, a flat area in the mountains outside of Tokyo, about the size of a football field. This site served as the location of all of Ieyasu’s fights, and many scars scattered across the area and the mountain walls around it served as a reminder of each kill the Council member had.
“Shall we dispense with the warm ups and go straight to the end?” The old man Ieyasu asked, cracking his back before drawing the Kodachi that served as his Zanpakuto.
“Cut to the chase huh? Sure, why not, I didn’t get much sleep last night; I’d kinda like to get this finished so I can take a nap.” Edwin responded in a happy tone. He was surprised how little anger he felt at the moment. It was probably because he spent the past 4 years telling himself it wasn’t going to be for revenge he was fighting.
“Very well then, Bankai!” As the old man spoke his Kodachi sunk into the ground, which began to shake violently. Edwin jumped in the air and condensed the spirit particles under his feat to allow him to hang in the air which solved the shaking problem.
Sky scraper sized vines began growing out of the sides of the mountains that surrounded the arena, but Edwin was not going to wait for Ieyasu’s Bankai to finish forming, “Bakudo 75, Quintet of Iron Pillars!” He called out. The five pillars created slammed down on Ieyasu, surprised that Edwin did not wait to see what his Bankai was doing like most did. Edwin knew that as soon as his Bankai was done forming in about 10 seconds it would free Ieyasu with as little as one strike, so he quickly began reciting the incantation for Black Coffin.
One of the giant vines slammed itself into the pillars on top of Ieyasu; the old man pulled himself up, only to hear Edwin saying the last words of Black Coffin’s Incantation. “Shit” he cursed as he jumped to the side as the black box formed, his right arm being caught. He grunted as it got sliced, but didn’t wait for the attack to finish to attack on his own. Using his left arm, he made the vines converge on Edwin.
Edwin flashed to dodge the first sweeping vine, but the second was already attacking and slammed into his back hard, sending him flying into the ground. Edwin stood slowly and flashed stepped away from the vines as they all slammed down into where he was. “Not bad.” Ieyasu said calmly. He knew enough about Edwin to know his Zanpakuto wasn’t suited for fighting well, though it would at least be better than fighting with nothing. “Release your Zanpakuto though. It would just be an embarrassing death if you didn’t.”
Edwin drew Setsuyaku Ibuki, and held it out in front of him. “Hmm? Alright I guess. Se-bu, Setsuyaku Ibuki” Just as the two blades finished forming Edwin had to raise them to block an attack from the nearest vine. His body shook from the force, and his shikai’s blades cracked slightly. Damn, just from one hit? No choice then, it will be easier to defend with my Bankai anyway. “Bankai! Ketatamashii Setsuyaku Ibuki, kasu Shikyo shou!”
The fighting went on for over an hour, but soon it became apparent the end was near. Ieyasu’s Bankai was done to only one vine, for he had enough Reiatsu for only one, and Edwin’s Zanpakuto had returned to its sealed state for Ieyasu had shattered his Bankai. “Old man…” Edwin panted as he looked to Ieyasu from his position on one of the cliffs overlooking the flat area that had served as their battlefield. “Tell me, why do you kill those who challenge you?”
Ieyasu smiled, his teeth were crooked and stained. “Always best to kill a problem before it becomes a real problem”
Edwin coughed lightly before he tried to respond. For such a light cough though, a lot of blood came out. His Bankai is all about blunt damage, I’m sure my insides are all sorts of messed up. He was sore all over, the pain specifically in his lungs next to unbearable. He knew he had to end it in his next few attacks, both for his bodies sake, and the fact he was almost out of Reiatsu.
He sheathed his Zanpakuto and held his hand in front of his face, dragging it down his hollow mask appeared, it’s ever present frown reflected the feeling of his body to the letter. Flash stepping in front of Ieyasu he drew a circle with his hand “Hado 83, Tempest Torrent!” Ieyasu jumped to avoid the torrent of electrified water, and Edwin flash stepped behind him, he was focusing more on having the vine try to attack Edwin than moving quickly, which was exactly what Edwin wanted. “Hado 58, Frozen Needles!” Ieyasu had a paniced look on his face as he now jumped to avoid the ice needles flying towards him, his already injured arm from the first Black Coffin getting hit by two of the needles. Edwin was okay with the light hit, he just needed this last one to strike, one last time he flashed stepped behind Ieyasu, who, anticipating it, had the vine on its way down. Edwin pointed his right hand at Ieyasu as he turned around, gray energy forming at the tips of three of his fingers. Edwin felt his mask cracking as he coldly said “Cero.”
The blast of energy hit it’s mark, and Ieyasu fell to the ground, his face and upper chest burned and bloodied his last vine of his Bankai falling to the ground beside him. Gasping for air, he rolled over and looked up at Edwin, whose mask had just shattered and disappeared. Drawing his Zanpakuto Edwin put it to Ieyasu neck, and looking into the now pathetically whimpering old man’s eyes, he felt all that anger he had hidden towards the man well up. Ieyasu watched in horror as Edwin’s face slowly turned into a scowl, tears welling up in his eyes as a low growl escaped from his throat. Ieyasu opened his mouth, presumably to beg, but the only sound to come out was a gurgle as his neck was slashed. Edwin wiped the blood off his Zanpakuto, sheathed it, and walked away.
He had done it, he had gotten the revenge he had convinced himself up in till the last moment he didn’t want, and he was now a Council member in the Syndicate, and he resolved to be the best damn Council member he could, for the good of his race.
Additional Info: Edwin is a incredibly light sleeper, and is easily stirred awake, so he can only get around 3 consecutive hours of sleep a night. Due to lack of sleep, he frequently gets headaches, and in general dislikes sun light.
Edwin currently has a white gyrfalcon named Oliver Cromwell, though he tends to just call him Olly. He has for the past century stopped using a glove when training and handling whomever his falcon at the time is, so his left arm bares quite a few scars from the birds.
General
Name: Setsuyaku Ibuki(Saving Breath)
Spirit Description: Setsuyaku Ibuki takes the form of an elderly woman. She has a long, wrinkled face, a thin but sharp hooked nose, and pale lips always in a small scowl, giving her the look of a
grumpy but wise sage. Her eyes are red in color, but have much film over them so instead they look like a very pale pink. Her hair is white, tied in one long braid that reaches just about mid back, although she always has it over her shoulder. She wears a mess of white robes, bulky and warm looking, and is always slightly hunched over.
Her attitude leaves much to be desired; cold, judgmental, demanding, and always bitterly sarcastic. She and Edwin have a decent enough relationship, though it mostly consists of sarcastic comments being traded back and forth.
Sealed: When sealed, Setsuyaku Ibuki takes the form of a tachi, which hangs from a silk sash tied to his belt on the left side. The tachi is slightly longer than the average katana, and has a white hilt and sheath. It’s guard is square, though it’s sides have a slight serration to them. Running along hilt is a single thin red line, jaggedly zigzagging along all sides, though it ends at the guard.
Shikai

Appearance:As he speaks the release phrase, Edwin holds Setsuyaku Ibuki in front of him, turned so it’s blade is facing to the right. The sword glows with red energy and splits so that another sword facing to the left in his other hand, each blade grows about half a foot, and hook at the top. While the blades grow, the hilts too grow by about 2 inches and turn into basket hilts. Once the change is complete, the red glow dissipates. The entirety of both swords looks as though it is made from frosted glass. The blades, hilts, and guards are all somewhat see through, and inside the swords are jagged patterns created by red lines. The blades are incredibly sharp, requiring almost no pressure to cut through things like cement.
Abilities: Other than it’s extreme sharpness, Setsuyaku Ibuki has only one ability.
Jinsei (Life, Humanity): With the command, one of Setsuyaku Ibuki’s blades will begin to hum a low pitch tone. The red lines in the blade will spread, turning the whole sword read, at which point, Edwin stabs it into the person he wants to heal. The blade disappears, and the persons wounds will begin to close, after ten seconds, the blade reappears in Edwin’s hand, at which point he can repeat the process in order to keep healing.
Minor wounds it can heal within the ten seconds, at very little Reiatsu cost, but major wounds can take more than one 10 second sessions, the average deep sword cut taking about 30 seconds to complete stop the bleeding, and up to 5 minutes to remove the wound and pain associated with it completely. Completely healing a wound like that takes about 15% of his Reiatsu. Non-instant fatal wounds can take up to ten minutes just to keep the person from dying, and up to 30% of his Reiatsu.
The person being healed cannot move while the sword is in their body, as such, it is an ill advised move for him to try healing himself in mid combat, because he will be paralyzed for ten seconds, and as such an opponent could just move to decapitate him as soon as the healing is done. This ability cannot be used on an opponent he means to paralyze with it, if he tries it will just be a normal stab.
Bankai
Activation Phrase: “Bankai! Ketatamashii Setsuyaku Ibuki, kasu Shikyo shou!” (Refuse Death’s Prize, Final Release, Piercing Saving Breath, refuse Death’s prize.)
Appearance:The two blades glow with red energy as he speaks the activation phrase. The blade in his left hand travels up his arm, forming a large shield attack to the outside of his arm. The blade in his right hand too, travels up his arm, forming a lance attached to the outside of his arm. On his back forms a large disc.
The shield, lance, and disc are made out of the same frosted glass looking material that his Shikai was, with red lines running throughout them in jagged patterns. The lance sticks out about 7 feet in front of him, and 2 feet behind him. Its sides are serrated with very tiny hooks, which can tear of flesh when the lance is dragged backwards along someone’s skin.
Like his Shikai, both the lance’s points and the little hooks are extremely sharp. The shield, when held in front of him covers from his head down to his knees and it is as broad as his forearm is long. The disc on his back in terms of size is as broad as he is, and sticks up just a tiny bit above his head, and a tiny bit below his waste.
His Bankai is very light, almost weightless, which means he can wield it with incredible ease. The shield provides good front protection, and the disc on his back provides protection from attacks from behind. Repeated attacks from a Bankai level force can break any part of his Bankai, but within 1 minute the Bankai will repair itself. However, if all three pieces are broken at the same time, the Bankai will return to its sealed state for 2 hours.
After ten post, Ketatamashii Setsuyaku Ibuki must return to it's sealed state to recharge, able to be released again in 2 hours.
Abilities: Unlike his Shikai, his Bankai has a ranged attack, which, while not very powerful for a Bankai attack, serves as something.
Seki (cough): Saying the name of the attack and thrusting the lance forward, a beam of white energy will shoot at his opponent. This attack travels at a Bala’s speed, but retains a Cero like strength. It has a 1 minute cooldown before it can be used again.
Jinsei (Life): It is a much more powerful version of his Shikai’s Jinsei, and is the main power of his Bankai. At Edwin’s command, the disc on his back turns red as the lines inside it expand, and it flies off his back. It hovers over the person Edwin wants healed, and as long as it is over them they will be healing.
The Bankai’s version has no 10 second limit, it will keep healing in till the person is healed or Edwin stops it. Within the same amount of time as his shikai, and with the same amount of his Reiatsu, Edwin can complete heal a fatal wound, were as before he could only keep it from being fatal. As long as they are side by side, Edwin can heal three people at once with his Bankai, though each one has an individual Reiatsu cost depending on their wounds. Like his Shikai, his Bankai paralyzes those it is healing in till the healing is done, and like the shikai, he can’t use it on a person with the intention of paralyzing them.
Appearance: Edwin’s mask has a depressed look about it, reflecting the personality of his inner hollow. Its teeth are sharp, with its bottom center two teeth and the two teeth immediately beside it’s front two teeth are exaggeratedly long, sticking out of the borders of the mouth slightly. The teeth are in a very sad frown, and the narrow eye wholes tilt up towards the center, increasing the look of depression. Encircling his left eye is a black starburst, its rays extending across the mask to its various ends. Four horns extend from the top and bend back, eventually going parallel with the back of his head, making it a semi helmet.
Level Of Control:Level Two
Hollow Abilites:
Cero: A blast of concentrated spirit energy. Edwin’s Cero is a gray color, and is fired from his pointer, middle, and ring finger pressed together on his right hand.
Because of the nature of Edwin’s Zanpakuto, he focuses on fighting primarily with kido, and is a skilled practitioner Eishohaki. He is able to use most kido spells without a chant and get a pretty strong result out of it still.
In the below, an asterisk * notes a custom kido.
Bakudo:
[1]Restrain - Locks a target's arms in place behind their back. Requires the user to be close to the target and with a clear sight to them. This technique is weak and someone of equal strength to the user could easily break out if given a little time.
*[27]Tremor - User thrust palm towards the ground under the opponents feet, causing the ground to shake for 5 seconds, which forces the opponent to focus on maintaining balance. Incantation: “The cacophony of life’s ever perplex motions upset the balance of purity’s tower, Bakudo 27, Tremor!”
[61] Six Rods of Prison Light - Summons six thin, but wide, beams of light that slam into a target's midsection, holding them in place. A moving target is hard to hit with this kido, but one standing still is a near guaranteed hit due to its amazing speed. However for a level 60 kido it is fairly weak, anyone stronger than the user would be able to break out of it if given some time. Incantation: “Carriage of thunder. Bridge of a spinning wheel. With light, divide this into six. Bakudo 61, Six Rods of Prison Light!”
[75] Quintet of Iron Pillars - Summons five incredibly tall and thick pillars to pin a target to the ground. The pillars themselves fall from the sky and pushes anything which gets in their way onto the ground and holds them there. Though hard to hit with, it is incredibly sturdy and only excessive physical strength can break this kido.
Incantation: “Walls of ironsand, a priestly pagoda, glowing ironclad fireflies. Standing upright, silent to the end. Bakudo 75, Quintet of Iron Pillars!”
Hado:
[4] White Lightning - Fires a concentrated bolt of from the caster's finger
[33] Blue Fire, Crash Down - Fires a burst of blue spiritual energy at a target in a similar manner to 31, but over a wider area and with more power. Incantation – “Ye Lord! Mask of flesh and bone, all creation, flutter of wings, ye who bears the name of Man! Truth and temperance, Upon this sinless wall of dreams unleash but slightly the wrath of your claws! Hado 33, Blue Fire, Crash Down!”
*[58]Frozen Needles – The User recites the chant with hands above head, and as they finish it they swing their hands forward, causing a shower of ice needles to fly towards their foe. Incantation: “Heaven cries tears of broken glass, unbeknownst to the sun, it's ever present heat is rejected for the loving embrace of void. Hado number 58: 1000 Needles!"
[63] Thunder Roar Cannon - Fires a massive wave of yellow energy at a target.
Incantation: “Sprinkled on the bones of the beast! Sharp tower, red crystal, steel ring. Move and become the wind, stop and become the calm. The sound of warring spears fills the empty castle! Hado 63, Thunder Roar Cannon!”
*[83] Tempest’s Torrent - User draws a circle with their palm, about the size of a basketball, from the circle shoots a high pressure torrent of water with electricity coursing throughout it towards the opponent, this attack incidentally creates a lot of steam. Incantation: “Skies over the calm ocean speak of dangerous tides. 5th crest of the 7th wave, 3rd bolt of the 10th cloud, ever for more the seas boil with electricity flowing current Hado 83, Tempest’s Torrent!”
[90] Black Coffin - Forms a box of black energy around a target, which is then pierced by dozens of energy "spears", lacerating the one inside from head to toe. Its appearance and function is reminiscent of a common magician's trick, as well as certain torture devices used during the Spanish Inquisition.
Additional:
Shunpo - A movement ability that allows the user to move faster than the eye can follow.

Roleplay Sample: “Why do they always challenge me?” Edwin mumbled to himself as he watched his opponent walk down into the basement of the Syndicate’s headquarters. The kid couldn’t have been more than 15 when he died, and was probably only 50 to 60 years old in terms of afterlife, and Edwin could not remember what his name was suppose to be for the life of him. Truth be told, the kid looked exactly the same of at least 2 other people who had challenged Edwin over his short tenure as 7th Council member, the kids Reiatsu was low, he probably didn’t even know Bankai, just a bad attitude and some ambition.
The kid grinned the kind of know it all grin that annoyed Edwin quite a bit. Edwin sighed and put his hand behind his head, scratching the back of it as he asked, “Let me guess, you heard I have a healing type Zanpakuto and thought I’d be an easy Council seat to take, right?”
“Only those with the most powerful Zanpakutos should be on the Council! Whoever before you had to be hella weak! I’ma going to kick you off even without having Bankai!” Bingo Edwin thought to himself, I called no Bankai. The kid sounded so sure of himself though; Edwin tried his hardest not to burst into laughter, and while he was able to keep from hysteria, he did giggle a little. What’s with him? Does he really think a Zanpakuto alone is what decides someone’s strength?
“Hehehe…well uh, tell you what, first move is yours, hehe” Edwin said, stifling his laughing as best he could.
The kid grinned wider, “Your gonna regret that! Knock ‘em down! Shinken!” The kids katana glowed a deep blue, the blade bent back and forth in till the entire length of the katana was zigzagging. “My sword can crush any opponent with its mighty wave, Crest!” With the command of Crest, the kid swung his sword, and a burst of water shot towards Edwin, who moved his hand forward from the back of his head, forming his hollow mask on his face.
Edwin flashed behind the kid, dodging the attack completely. The attack slammed into the wall Edwin was standing in front of, looking like it had quite a bit of force. “That attack looked like it had some oomph to it, but it was just to dang slow. Bakudo 61, Six Rods of Prison Light.” Edwin said softly, the re-verb of his voice freaked the kid out a bit, for he hadn’t even gotten more than the most basic control over his hollow. The beams of light slammed into the kid, who desperately struggled to get out. He never would though, not without Edwin ending the spell, Edwin was on a whole different level than him.
Edwin walked in front of the kid, removing his hollow mask and letting it disappear. “Look, your about 100 years to early to be thinking about trying to join the Council, go get Bankai, go train with it for a good couple decades, then go challenge one of the others, but not me.” Edwin unsheathed his Zanpakuto and playfully put it to the
kid’s neck, “Understand?”
“Ye…Yes sir!” the kid stammered, his eyes frozen on Edwin’s blade. Edwin smiled at the kid, it was a warm, gentle smile, that made the kid relax.
“Alright then, I’m going to go take a nap.” He said as he turned to walk away.
“So, you gonna let me go, or what?” the kid spat rather indigently, now that he was sure he wasn’t going to get killed.
Edwin turned around, and tilted his head slightly, “Oh yeah, I forgot.” he said as he smiled slightly wider. “Here you go.” As the six bars of light disappeared, Edwin slammed his Zanpakuto’s hilt down as hard as he could on the kids face, knocking him out cold. Edwin’s green eyes glanced over the kid; he was much more tolerable unconscious.
As annoying as the kid was though, he had spunk, and potential, and Edwin couldn’t help but like him for it. Sheathing his sword, the 2nd Council member turned on his heals and walked out and back up to the main hall. “Hey Ed, how’d it go?” A middle aged Vizard asked as Ed came up the stairs.
“Well, the kid, whatever his name is, is lying down their unconscious, probably with a broken nose.” Edwin gestured back down the stairs with his thumb. “He has a lot of potential though, I think.”
“Ha, that’s a surprise, he seemed like he was way too much of a know it all brat for you to have anything kind to say about him”
Edwin merely shrugged at the comment and began moving on, but stopped himself, turning his head to look back over his shoulder, “You’re going out on the town tonight, right?”
“Yeah Ed, why?”
“Think I’ll join you; just wake me up when you want to go.” The other Vizard nodded as he began descending the stairs to the basement, his boots echoing throughout the staircase. Edwin moved on to his room, opening the door he walked into the tidy little space. It had a window, a mattress on the floor with a big quilt and pillow on it, and a desk. He kept the window open at all times, so his falcon could fly around and hunt.
“Olly must be eating” he mumbled tiredly as he flopped down onto the mattress, flinging his glasses onto the floor, he closed his eyes, and in about 15 seconds, was snoring lightly. Within 3 minutes his falcon flew in, it was a large gyrfalcon, its feathers a bright white. The bird perched itself beside his mattress, but his glasses on the floor caught its attention. Jumping over to them, it started scrapping them across the floor with its beak, the noise of which stirring Edwin from his slumber.
“Oliver, stop that…” he growled, as he turned his head to look at the bird who immediately hopped over at the sound of its name. “Those are for Council members only to play with; you can take my seat if you want to play with them.” He sleepily joked. The bird tilted its head as he spoke, and once he finished it shook its head trying to dry it, for it was drizzling lightly outside, an overhang above his window keeping the rain out. Edwin laughed at the well timed shake of the head. “Yeah, I don’t blame you for not wanting it.” Edwin rolled on to his side, and tried to get back to sleep, while his bird returned to its examination of his glasses.
General Info
Zanpakuto
Shikai
Activation Phrase:”Se-bu, Setsuyaku Ibuki”
Inner Hollow
Shinigami Techniques

Other Characters:None
