The Prophets of Sin Book 1
Greed
~*~Prologue~*~
The candlelight flickered softly, a beacon in the darkness which surrounded the polished wooden table. The shadowed faces of seven figures stared at each other intently. The silence was nearly palpable, the air tense between them. Finally, someone breached the silence. Pulling the tattered white hood away from his grizzled black hair, one of them stood up, the flickering lights casting an eerie shine in his violet eyes. The others turned their attention to the scarred face of the standing man. He raised his hand, and placed it on the table, which caused a soft "whumph" to echo in the darkness surrounding the globe of light given off from the wavering flame. He wet his parched lips, and finally spoke.
"My brothers...it has come close to the time of Prophecy...I have called you hear to discuss our next move." The congregation shifted their positions as a second man rose and lowered his own hood revealing tussled brown hair with matching eyes.
"I say we do nothing for the time being...as the prophecy states. 'Peace will reign for years upon years, before one graced with the power of the gods will rise, and be as a catalyst for destruction or creation upon which the world will crumble or flourish.' We have only to wait until this 'catalyst' reveals themselves...that my brothers is when we move."
The first man growled, his voice deep and guttural as he responded. "If we don't move now Sloth, than our efforts for preparation shall be for naught. We will obtain nothing if we just sit around and wait!"
"That's just like you Greed...Always thinking about yourself." The second man, Sloth responded with a grin on his face as he took his seat again.
A third man lowered his hood without getting up, revealing black hair with a pair of emerald stripes racing back from the sides of his forehead to the end of his slick ponytail which fell over his left shoulder. His lips were cracked into a smirk as he too spoke with a voice that seemed full of dislike, yet at the same time amused at the goings on around him. "Both of you should remain silent if you wish to keep your tongues..."
"Why you..." Greed clenched his fists with irritation.
"Easy brother Envy...you may cause Greed to be as Wrath..." Sloth said with an air of mild amusement.
A fourth figure slammed his fist down on the table which caused the room to hush. "I resent that you lazy bastard. So silence your tongue, or I shall do it for you." The man's rough voice had an air of constant irritation, bordering on anger. Folding his arms over his chest, Wrath glared at the group from beneath the white hood.
"That attitude isn't going to get you anywhere brother Wrath..." Sloth said quietly as he imitated the aforementioned Wrath by crossing his arms.
"Arguing will not help us any in this crucial of times. A decision must be made, we have been together for many a year. It is time we separated, each of us is to take a region of the land...what we must decide is who is to go where." Envy glanced at Sloth, who cocked his eyebrow in response.
"You want me to choose?" The tossle haired man looked baffled.
"That does not warrant an answer..." Envy replied irritably.
Sloth looked thoughtful for a moment, his mouth opening and closing several times before he actually spoke. "Than I shall take Altar, I am most familiar with it's design, and know most of the township by heart. I doubt very much can escape my gaze if I am there."
Envy nodded in approval, turning to the figure at his right. Lowering there own hood, she was revealed to be a young woman. She had black hair that rolled in seamless waves over her shoulders the ends of which fell to rest to just above her collar bone. A calm immediately spread through the room when she spoke, removing the tension from the air. "Krena." In that one word, one could feel a difference in the atmosphere of the room.
The figure to her right placed his elbows on the table and laced his fingers together, leaving his hood on as he spoke in a voice that would befit someone of noble birth. "And what of you Envy?"
"If you would exercise a little patience Pride, you wouldn't have to even ask." Envy snapped back without hesitation. "Haven."
"The land of the changelings...You would pick there..." Greed said as he returned to his own seat. "I myself have chosen Blastheim."
Envy scoffed in response to Greed's comment. "You say my choice is a typical one, yet you are even more so. The city of riches...very befitting for the one named Greed." The man ran a hand through his hair, his middle and ring finger passed through the emerald stripe as he went. Pride took a sighing breath before he began to speak."That's Sloth, Lust, Envy, and Greed. Wrath, your decision if you please."
The man turned his head and spat on the floor behind him before speaking. "Charion."
"Gluttony?"
The man between Greed and Wrath lowered his own hood and shook out the tangled mane of copper hair. He had a mature, yet at the same time slightly sloppy appearance. He was the type of man that you respect regardless of what he does. "Anister." He had a rich, cheerful voice that told one that he has a very pleasant outlook on life.
"Very well, that leaves Charity and the Citadel for myself." Pride and Gluttony shared a look of understanding as the group rose as one. "Meeting adjourned, make preparations for tomorrow's departure. We shall meet again via Scrying Stones in one year's time." And with Pride's final words all but Pride turned around and parted ways. "And so it begins..." With those final words, the candlelight was extinguished, throwing the room in to complete and utter darkness.
