When the first shinigami were born, they lived in a Soul Society ruled over by a being called the Spirit King, and his family, all of whom were protected by the finest shinigami alive; the Royal Guard. None of the shinigami possessed Zanpakuto’s, the knowledge of such weapons not in their interests, for they all had great strength in the Demon Arts of Kidou.
A similar situation had arisen in the Hueco Mundo. In a city of hollows, there was one true master of the hollow world, the entity known as the Gran Rey, flanked by his finest warriors, the First Vasto Lorde, above and beyond their later kin in strength and intelligence. With two kingdoms of spirits alive, it was inevitable that they would eventually collide.
The Gran Rey made the opening move, assaulting Soul Society with an army of hollows. The following battle was so terrible that no records were ever made. In the end, twelve members of the Royal Guard clashed with the four Vasto Lorde, whilst the Spirit King and the strongest of his Guards, the Supreme Captain, met the Gan Rey in combat. In the end, through the efforts of the Captain and the Spirit King, the Gran Rey was killed, but the Spirit King received a great wound, that to this day he has not recovered from. Upon seeing their leader slain, the Four Vasto Lorde retreated into the depths of the Hueco Mundo, all of them terribly wounded. In contrast, few of the Royal Guard were greatly harmed…it was a crushing victory for Soul Society, one that would establish their dominance over the destiny of mankind’s souls.
The Spirit King made two moves that day that would change the course of history. With the first, he disbanded the Royal Guard, forming them instead into the first Gotei 13, each Guard acting as a Captain of a Division. With the second, and his final recorded act in Soul Society, the Spirit King moved himself and his family to another dimension separate of Sereitei, giving the new Captain Commander the key to access it. With his wound, the Spirit King could no longer rule Soul Society effectively, but with the Gran Rey gone, he could remove himself from the conflict…there was no threat that the Royal Guard, now the Thirteen Captains, could not handle.
Over time, the Captains forgot about the importance of the Spirit King. When it became apparent there were other shinigami that could become Captains, a newcomer would take the place of a powerful, senior Captain, who would be sent on the Spirit King as a Royal Guard. This way, there would always be individuals to protect the man who helped save Soul Society, in the event another means of entering his world was discovered…for anyone who could find such a means would surely be immensely powerful.
In the Hueco Mundo, all things dissolved into chaos. The hollows, lacking leadership, became animals once more. The First Four Vasto Lorde descended into the depths of their world, and when they returned, new Vasto Lorde had risen. The strongest of the Elder Vasto Lorde was slain in a conflict with the new apex hollows, another of the Elder Vasto Lorde was imprisoned for millennia, and the last two vanished, and have not been seen again since. It became clear to the Elder Vasto Lorde that their powers, whilst great, were not enough to rule the chaos of the Hueco Mundo.
Thousands of years later, and shinigami and hollows still fight their war. There are new forces in the fray, Vizard and Arrancar, but neither have come to tip the scales. The war seems set to continue forever...yet in the future, a darkness looms. The First War of Shinigami and Hollow was never truly finished…and there are those who desire to finish it.
This is Destiny of the Soul!
