Third Division
Gate Watchers
Third Division Statement (Nailed to a door somewhere)
I won’t bore you with history or morality and cognitive reasoning; no persuasive arguments or promises of glory or honor. I promise nothing, I will grant you nothing, but you shall become something; I do not think of myself or this division as some heroic battle bound division whose soul purpose is to protect and serve Soul Society. We have a duty, a purpose, simply put, we are the guardians of a paradise lost, we watch the watchers, and we monitor the comings and going of Soul Society by way of the gates. Our job is a task left to those of us who do it best; our mission statement is a simple one “We must endure”

Captain Hizeme Shihouin, Welcome to Soul Society
Who we are and what we do
The third division was born when the first and last gates were in place, a division was created for that soul purpose, monitoring who entered and left Soul Society by way of the four gates. Ironically or perhaps purposefully, the gates are respected to the Cardinal Compass, North, South, East and West, while the only true gate is the South Gate (Leading to Rukongai). Out of that purpose another arose, in conjunction with other division, the third division simply must hold, must endure until others arrive; to be cold, merciless, compassionless; why you may ask, it is our job to determine where and what forces are needed where, to declare certain sections danger zones, or to simply blockade areas for maximum defense and security. We are not a police force, nor are we a prison guard, we aid and help but in no way to we police or govern. Our job is not to protect and serve, but to hinder and hamper opposing forces, to slow them down, or to simply push them back using whatever means nessessary. If you are reading this then you are most likely asking yourself, what is in it for me, what will this division do for me, the answer is simply nothing, we won’t hold your hand, we won’t be there when you get an boo-boo, in fact we honestly don’t care what you do as long as you do your job and are there when we call. I am sorry to say, you won’t be fighting many hollows, going to the real world for adventures, in fact you will most likely never leave Soul Society for years at a time, the most action you will likely see is a riot or uprising in one of the poorer sections of Rukongai, where a gatekeeper is in danger, or uncertain what to do.
Life, Liberty and the Captain-
Life in the Third division isn’t glamorous or fun unless you find ways to entertain yourself; a complete authority of the gates seems like it might be fun, but one will quickly learn that in order to get out and get some air, one will have to wax and wane with other division’s whims;
Our Building-
Funny to think that the third division would have a complex such as ours, but it does; the second largest complex with respect to the military/academy grounds. The Third Division is the most heavily fortified division headquarters out of all the division’s (maybe the 12th but it can never be known for certain) Why you wonder, we are a holding facility for other division’s, in times of crisis we serve to house wounded and help the fourth division, in times of invasion we serve to house those to weak to protect themselves, in times of severe distress we act as a second command quarters and rely station, and in times of attack we serve as a rely station, stop station and most importantly gate monitoring faculty. But the best is often saved for last, in times of peace or tranquility, we serve as volley ball and swimming grounds, a mini-vacation spot when there is nothing else to do. Hot springs, volley ball courts, “racing” grounds, and perhaps on a good night a little entertainment; of course no illegal activities occur in our buildings (four in fact, one for each gate). You maybe wondering just what exactly we do in our “off” time, well the third division is the only division allowed to serve, dispense, and obtain alcoholic and other types of beverages, snacks, and even shopping facilities. Of course no gambling or wages may be placed in any of our ‘official’ buildings and those caught gambling face a steep fine and punishment.
Gates-
If you are one of the lucky ones to get caught with gate privileges then consider sharing your wealth of gate power with others who are less fortunate, now this doesn’t mean bribery or blackmail, but favors often come divisions three way, just don’t steal others favored customers or you might get stuck with gate patrol, which totally bites. Remember our personal motto “You scratch our back we scratch yours” and that in no truer than ever, wanting to go sight seeing, visit shops in Rukongai go right ahead, as long as it is in the name of Guard duty, or Gate Defense just don’t let the Captain or Vice Captain see or catch you not at your post, or not on “duty”.
The senkaimon gate-
A duty that isn't fun in the sun, or anything of that sort, just basic monitoring of who enters and leave Soul Society and what times, where, when and if specified why. At times the division can restrict movements in and out, or perhaps detain someone, hinder, but rarely do we shut the gate down completely, seeing as diastor could strike at any minute a constient vigle must be maintained. But as such, under certain circumstances the gate may become restricted access or privilaged ranked only, but in emergiences and such.
The Captain-
If you are lucky enough to have finished reading this, then prepare to be graced by the words about our captain; leave him alone, or at least don’t bother him with bothersome things.
A small request letter from Captain Hizeme Shihouin
Hello Friends,
On every gate are two signs, one on the inside and one on the outside, please read and learn the methods of those signs. The inner sign states as follows “Thanks for Visiting Soul Society, hoped you enjoyed your stay, please do inform us when you want to come again” The outer sign states “Soul Society Welcomes you, please state your business and someone will be with you shortly” These signs are here for your benefit, in your line of work there will be many times when a simple point to the sign will save you the effort of having to explain why someone can’t come in.
Now that the gate watching duties are gone, let me tell you a little about how I like to run the division,
1. Do not ask me for any illegal activities, don’t ask me where to get a good drink, where to buy something, where to make a little extra spending money, I can not answer that, so please no.
2. Do not try to sneak out to the real world without telling me, in fact if you tell me before hand I might just have something for you to pick up, or someone to see, that would please me very much, and I always repay my debts
3. I get this maybe once a year, no I will not show you my shikai or bankai, or help you obtain yours, that is the vice captains job, not mine.
4. Please, please, please do not try to make deals with other captains, they are your superiors, I don’t want a nasty visit from the 2nd division captain because you wouldn’t let them through the gate without “proper” authority. Nor do I want to hear from other captains or vice captains about you stiffing people because a fair price couldn’t be paid. This is everyone’s Soul society, and those are my gates not yours, so if you can’t do your job I can always find someone who can.
5. I pride myself on my collection of shops, saloons, bars please don’t tell me what we need or what you want, deal a fair trade to get what you want, don’t complain to me about how no one carries a brand of shoes, or a new purse.
Alright well that little list is nailed outside my office door in case you ever forget or are misinformed.
Well Thank you for taking the time to read this, and my letter, I hope this has informed you about exactly what I expect from my division members, as well what my division does and the powers that govern it.
Signed
Hizeme Shihouin –Captain of Division Three
P.S I love creative and inventive technologies, from any division, from any shop, just in case you wanted to know for my birthday or just because you wanted too (2)
