Before we even begin, this thread WILL contain SPOILERS. If you haven’t seen the movie I suggest against reading any farther.
-----------------------
With the movie being released to video on April 22 I figure it’s about time someone opened a thread on this. Opinions of this movie vary a whole bunch from the greatest thing since wonder bread to ten big piles of steaming monster poo.
Personally I think it’s the sort of movie gods would make if they cared about movies…
But what are your opinions here? What do you think about the movie and if you do like it (or even if you don’t) do you have your own theories about what was happening?
I will include my own thoughts after someone else has posted but am trying to leave this first post rather sparse so that if someone goes and ignores my warning they can still stop before anything substantial is said.

I thought the movie was pretty good, it just got boring sometimes, like when their just sitting down there in the subway. The monster was pretty cool, as well as the little ones. The camera was actually pretty cool, and I didn't get motion sickness like some of my friends did from it. What I want to know is where the monster comes from, I was thinking the ocean, since that weird slusho thing seemed connected to it, or at least the people who made the movie said it was.

Slusho was just the codename for Cloverfield before it was released. A way to separate the viral advertising from the name until it came out though the name Cloverfield was actually attributed to the movie late in its production.
As for the “slow” parts it was an effect performed on purpose to make you feel like you were there seeing not just the action but the characters reactions. Like you my friends are very hit or miss on this, lots just want it to move on but I am rather fond of the way it was performed, in an odd way it manages to draw you to characters who in reality are very 2D thanks to the lack of detail in their roles. My guess is that if you were to take these parts out, despite that you might feel they were to slow, your interest in the characters dilemma would drop significantly.
And like you I never understood the whole “Queasy-cam” complaints. Maybe it was just because we were all gamers and used to disjointed movement but not one of the five people I went with including myself experienced this, nor did I see anyone else in the theater show signs. The irony of course was that we were in stadium seating which if anything should have made the effect worse. I hadn't even thought it might cause sickness until I heard the widespread reports.
The monster came from the ocean, this has been confirmed by J.J Abrams in several places. [BIGSPOILER]It is a baby who was supposed to have been at home in the deepest portions of the sea for thousands of years and was angered by a drilling operation. The whole “its a baby” can be seen in the fact that the monster isn't so much attacking as it is obviously scared and rampaging out of stress at popping out on land only to find itself in a loud city and getting shot at.[/BIGSPOILER] Though the information can be hard to find thanks to the fact that the Western version is still playing hard on the viral advertising the Eastern version has received a lot of background information. This makes sense as Abrams was inspired by Godzilla to give America its own big screen monster and did much of his planning there.
What I loved more than anything about the movie, maybe even more than the movie itself was the concept. The way that you were presented with the necessary information but never actually told anything meaning that you were free to draw your own conclusions. Many movies have tried this but end up feeling empty, Cloverfield on the other had came off feeling like allowing you to pool your own thoughts was the only logical solution. I know most people just saw a monster movie that was all action and little story but thats not how I view it, there are clues all through the movie and it gives you infinite possibilities to theorize if thats the sort of movie watcher you are.
