Alright seeing as amongst those I listen to, to judge what should be done there has been a relative split on this matter I am now taking a grand tally of what the board as a whole thinks.
The basic idea is whether an arc will be carried out in one large coherent post or in multiple small post. In other words instead of everyone posting their multiple characters actions in one large post they split into multiple smaller ones that all are still part of the arc but in which the characters are generally to far apart to interact. Lets look at a comparison to make a decision.
Posting in smaller segments has the effect of being less cluttered and easier to manage (for you all at least - --_- --). It also keeps you from having to read a bunch of stuff that doesn't directly pertain to your character in the event you have A.D.D, the attention span of a gnat or think Duke Nukem was the best game ever. As you can tell I am not particularly fond of this one but despite my sarcasm that IS the positive side.
However though in comparison by splitting an arc into multiple parts you turn what was a cohesive story into multiple small parts. The main argument others have used is that whole “not pertaining to your character” card but while that might be true in a personal RP in a arc everything pertains. Large arcs are for story, everything that happens to each character will eventually be summed up along the path and while it might not have occurred to your character at that point in time it might very well determine their long term survival. By taking them apart into smaller components you remove any coherence, the multiple plots making a criss-cross of what should have been a singular story.
For instance if the students were rescued in another thread or an important bad guy showed up anybody who wasn't part of that arc would be clueless as to what had happened or who that person was if they showed up in the future. To rectify that issue a person would STILL have to read the other post if they wanted to know what the hell was going on with the story. Imagine if in the bleach manga we first went through everything Ichigo did all the way to finding out how it ended, then watched Ishida, then Chad rather than switching between them to discover the greater picture. You would be left in the dark about much of what was happening, much of which comes back to haunt a character later on. I mean don't get me wrong I understand the simplicity of controlling smaller groups factor but it removes tons of coherence and would make most people care allot less about each individual post than they would one detailed one. I know i certainly wouldn't be to happy around my 4th group of people guiding the RP in multiple directions with no sense of singularity. Essentially would you care as much about the “big bad guy” if you knew almost nothing about him or couldn't see the grand scheme of his plans because you missed half of the story?
Some people will call this post biased which it obviously is but this is an important site changing matter and I cannot honestly be neutral about it when it could change the very way we RP. I do however want you to respond honestly and while you should certainly think on what I have said feel free to disagree. I would also prefer you give me your reasons in a post and that is why a poll has not be attached, a person doesn't have to think hard to vote in a poll.
