I've been writing a proper backstory for my character Kehieleth, as he was originally meant to be a sub-character (being 'sort off' the inner hollow of Azerin, but I came to like him a lot). But as he has lived a long time, I felt I had to write a proper story to fit his age, so I've decided to split it up into chapters. I've written the first part so far, his life before he became a hollow, keep in mind this is waaaay back in the past around the later stages of the stone age, some things might not fit, but people in general back then wasn't as dumb as first thought it seems. I dunno, feel free to comment.
Keep in mind I am basing this partly on assumptions and partly on discussions with GK, so some of it might be right, some of it might not Take it with a grain of salt.
First Chapter - Life over Nine-Thousand years ago.
Long before the rise of men, Shinigami were already wandering the world. Acting as the guardians of the world of souls, Soul Society, and its god king. Though it happened that particulary evil men became Hollows back in these days, hollows as we know them were far from normal and it was in fact more common to find hollows inside Soul Society where the people were a lot more 'civilized' but in so being also more intelligent in general. And as many know, intelligence breeds evil. However nearly ten thousand years ago something happened in Soul Society, something which was never recorded in the history of this ancient place and few yet remain that can speak of it, but it preceeded the creation of the dark world of Hueco Mundo. And following its creation was a darkness which seemed to lower itself across the world, breeding evil in the wicked minds of the humans that had begun to gain true sentience and suddenly hollows poured forth and the Shinigami became the keepers of the spiritual peace.
Nearly a thousand years later.
The man or hollow now known as Kehieleth was born the fifth child of a man and woman who lived by themselves, though nearby one of the first few villages which had begun to sprout. Why they lived solitarely like they did was unknown to all but them, but in the end it was what spelled their doom. As the man who's name was Kehl grew up as a rather ordinary young boy at the time, that being that he worked by either hunting or helping with the primitive farming that went on at the time. During this short time, he was a very ordinary boy, because he did not know anything else. However, what he did not know was that he was one of the first spiritually aware humans with amazing potential and a high, for a human, reiatsu amount. Which brought with it hollow, and as the family lived solitarily, the Shinigami who were far fewer at the time could do little to protect all the spread out tribes of humans, and in truth, they were more interested in killing the hollows themselves than saving primitive human lives.
And it so happened that one day, when Kehl was out on the field of mostly wild plants and was tending to it he suddenly heard a loud soul piercing shriek that echoed out over the landscape. And as he, scared and confused, looked up into the sky saw the black silhouette of a massive winged creature, its features being hidden by the sun's glare. Not knowing what it was, Kehl could just stand there, doing nothing but stare up at the beast which seemed to be looking for something. Then it seemed to spot something, and as it did it let out another loud shriek which terrified Kehl to his very core, but at the same time, deep inside, he admired it. The creature suddenly dived, going much faster than what a creature of its size should be capable off as it seemed to go straight for the hut-like house that Kehl and his family lived in. Thats when he saw its target, Kehl's father was outside, taking care of their youngest child as the mother was preparing the food for the day. Kehl was too young to truly understand just what was about to happen, but a part of him wanted to shout out to his father, to watch out or run, but another part of him desired to see just what would happen. In the end, Kehl did not have the time to make up his mind as the massive beast which his father somehow did not see came down on top of him with its massive dragon like claws.
There was a loud crash as the hollow landed, and at the same time a bone-crunching and sickening sound from the body of Kehl's father being crushed and snapped in two as the hollow carved a great ditch in the ground as it slid for several meters before stopping. The dumb beast had killed its pray before it could eat it, and as it looked down on the bloody mess it had created it must have realized this too, and instead turned to the young boy which had been just beside his father, but remained untouched. Although if one saw him they could tell that he seemed to be on the verge of collapsing in horror. The boy screamed, but was instantly cut short as the large reptilian beast lunged forward, snapping the young boy inbetween its large jaws and bit down. The decapitated head of the young boy fell down on the yellowed grass just in time for the worried mother to come out the opening of the house to see the bloody scene infront of her. However she was not spirit sensitive either, so she did not see the hollow. What she did see however was the blood which dripped from its growling jaws, and following it she saw the head of her youngest son, lying in a pool of blood on the ground.
The face of Kehl's mother went white, and she looked just about ready to faint. But then the hollow noticed her, and as it turned on the spot it created large marks in the ground which did not go unnoticed by the woman who screamed in terror as she ran back inside and as she did the hollow let out yet another piercing shriek before it flapped its leathery wings once and lifted off the ground, flying up nearly twenty meters above ground level as it shot a stream of white fire onto the hut-like house which caught fire instantly, the fire even penetrating the roof where it first hit. As Kehl stood out in the field, terrified and captivated by the scene being unfolded before him, he began to hear the screams of terror and for help from his mother, and the shouts of his older brothers and screams of his sister. However they did not know of the beast which now flew around outside, spewing fire around the house, purpously leaving one opening for the family, and as the first of them ran outside the hollow was upon Kehl's sister in mere seconds, tearing her appart in its massive claws and with its giant teeth, all the while roaring viciously before it gulped her down all at once.
As he watched the onslaught, Kehl realized that as soon as it was finished with them, it would come for him next. But it was with these selfish thoughts that Kehl also realized something else, he had no love for his family, there was the shock and pain of knowing they were now dead or soon about to die, but that was it! He did not feel any sorrow, no tears were comming up in his eyes, infact he was enjoying this! The very realization of this made him feel sick, what kind of person was he!? Becoming so caught up in his own thoughts, Kehl had no time to notice that the hollow was now finished, taking one final peek into the hut before it razed the burning house with its large tail and then launched to the sky once more, spewing more fire for the heck of it apparently.
That was when the massive beast saw him. The hollow had not noticed the boy previously, it had been searching for movement like the beast it was and as Kehl had been too frozen to move, and had stood in the high wheat nearly completely still all the time it had been there, it had not noticed him. However it now did, which it signaled with yet another soul piercing shriek which awoke the boy from his thoughts as he looked up and met the blazing yellow eyes of the hollow.
There was what appeared to be a strange pause, as a small bit of recognition, or was it sentience? seemed to be lit within the eyes of the beast. And simultaneously, Kehl came to a realization of his own, there was a great similiarity between himself and this beast, but just what was it? Was it the reason he could see and hear it, while the rest of his family appeared to have been unable to? Was it some form of sign from a higher power? He did not know, but whatever it might have been, it did not matter as the creature seemed to have snapped out of its trance and began a fierce dive toward the young boy, whos face became lit with fear. Kehl knew that it would do no good, but instinct told him to protect himself, and his reflexes listened more to instinct than his own logic, and so he let out a paniced scream as he tried to cover himself in the faint hope of surviving. But he knew death was comming.
Atleast, that is what would have happened, had he not had that short moment of trance with the beast. As he had stared into the hollows eyes, so had it into his, and in a strange twisted way, their souls had intertwined for but a moment. Which had awakened Kehl's inner power.
Having his eyes closed and his arms infront of his head, Kehl did not see what happened. But he surely felt it as a strange, warm and at the same time cold feeling shot up from deep inside him and exploded outward sending the wheat around him flying as it was torn from its very roots by the force of Kehl's released reiatsu, and the power of his ability. Several seconds passed and Kehl wondered why he was not dead yet, but that was when he heard the shriek of the hollow! No, it was not a shriek, it was a twisted scream of pain! As he slowly opened his eyes, the first thing he saw was his arms, emveloped in purple flames. At first he paniced, thinking it must be something the beast had done, but then he realized that the flames did not hurt him, infact he felt better than he ever had!
Comming to terms with this odd flame Kehl lowered his arms and saw the most surprising scene he had ever seen, even compared to the beast itself. A huge field of purple liquid-like flames covered the area infront of Kehl, it even reached several meters up into the air, and the dragon like hollow was caught in it. As it struggled to get out of the strange flames Kehl noticed how it seemed like the hollow was being burned, no not burned, more like melted or corroded by the purple flames. It continued to struggle like this for nearly a minute as the tail, wings and even arms and legs were completely destroyed by the flames, before it let out one final cry and collapsed inside the field of materialized corruption.
Hope filled Kehl's eyes as the beast collapsed, however the logical part of his mind wondered why the beast was being torn appart and eaten by the flames, but it made him feel stronger. As the beast of a hollow gave its last breath, the rest of its body was suddenly incinerated, and the spirit particles it let out, along with its consumed souls, was also torched by the corrupting flames, Kehl made another realization. The strange fire must have come FROM him! He made this connection from how great pain suddenly filled his chest, as a beastial urge to feed suddenly filled him and he collapsed on the ground, as the purple flames seemed to withdraw from the area and creeped back into Kehl. He passed out shortly thereafter.
After finally waking up several hours later Kehl found himself lying on the bare ground of the now completely destroyed wheat field, the area around him being completely burnt by the reptilian hollows flames, with what in the end saved Kehl's ass being that the sudden release of his powers had torn off or withered all the surrounding vegetation into nothing. However Kehl himself found himself wondering wheter he had fallen asleep during work somehow, it was dark outside and the sun had gone down several hours ago. Had he simply been dreaming? However the strange mark in the area around him did not go unnoticed, and as he looked toward what appeared to be several glowing spots some ways away, he realized it was the ruins of his house. The fire had ended hours ago, but there was still smoldering wood covering the ground where the house had once stood.
With this came the realization that everything he had seen had come to pass, and so he knew he was now alone. But that was not all, when his thoughts turned to the beast itself, they wandered off to the purple flames that had come from him, the purple flames which had killed the beast and, as it appeared, absorbed it into him. Then it happened again, a surge of emotions shot up from the depths of Kehl's soul, as if they were trying to take over. A strange, uncontrolled rage and hunger crept up inbetween all these strange emotions and suddenly he found himself screaming in mental pain in a near beast like way, before it seemed to take over and he found himself gorging on the broken corpse of his own father. The instincts of the hollow had been absorbed into himself, and being the young boy he was, he had no way to control them.
Had it not been for the beastial instincts controlling him, he would have vomited after he was finished, though he was for the most part unaware of what he himself was doing, his sanity or atleast sentience was beginning to return as he was finishing up. With blood covering his arms and almost the entire front of his body Kehl walked with unsteady steps away from the scene of his familys brutal deaths, and the cannibalism that he had just commited on his own father.
The young boy wandered for many hours, his head told him to look for water, so that he could clean himself and maybe go to the village nearby for help of some kind. Normally he would just have gone to the little lake behind a few hills near his house, but in his confused state he did not think that far ahead, and instead he walked in the direction of the village, and a source of water which was commonly used by the ones which was primarily farmers and living on the edge of the village. It should be ok right? No one would be out this late at night, right?
That was the thoughts which passed through his trembling mind as he continued his shaky steps toward the source of water which was just about an hour away.
Sadly however, Kehl did not have such luck this night. It would appear a young girl, maybe fifteen or so, had decided to go take a swim in the small body of water which stretched for about twenty meters right across in an uneven circle, and the moment he saw her in the water, thanks to the bright full moon which was now shining down on the pool. He was once more filled with that sickening urge to feed, that insatiable hunger that had filled him when he had... Eaten the body of his father... He was however steadfast this time, he was fully aware of himself, even if his head felt very woozy, and so he fought back against the hunger. And he almost succeeded.
But that was when the girl saw him, and though there was not much in terms of light sources, he stood out in the open enough for the girl to see his blood soaked body, which translated into a scream of fear as she tried to make her way onto the other side of the water and away. That was the wrong act however, as Kehl's confusion over the reaction caused his guard on the hollow instincts to falter, which was enough for them to take control once more. Yet this time, he was fully aware of what he did, just unable to stop it.
Dark purple energy suddenly surged out of him, and as he did a great leap Kehl flew through the air, being just above the girl he shot his arms down toward her and flames of corruptive energy was sent out, consuming the girls legs the instant they connected and with a painfull shriek the girl collapsed on the ground, as she screamed and whimpered in pain while trying to crawl away, having just gotten out of the pool. With a light thud Kehl landed right infront of the girl, who was in too much of a paniced state to truly notice, but Kehl himself was well aware of what was soon to follow as the insane, animalistic look on his face would have told nearly anyone. With reiatsu still surging through his body Kehl tore into the girl, his fingers becoming like claws thanks to the reiatsu empowering him and as he dug in with his teeth, they were like those of the reptile he had 'eaten' through his power. The screams of the poor girl echoed out in the night, but no one came to her rescue, and shortly after the pure water of the pool was stained with red.
After that the boy disappeared as well, too afraid of what might happen if he lost control with people around again. He had actively killed someone now, not only that, he had eaten her flesh while she was still alive. It was such an inhuman act that Kehl was scared to his very core, what WAS he!? His entire world had shattered and been turned into a box bouncing down a slope during an earthquake, and to escape it as much as he possibly could Kehl disappeared into the deep forests which spread out a few kilometers from the village. For several years he remained in there, hunting animals to survive and sate his damnable hunger which never sub-sided, but atleast he was in control of himself now. During this period Kehl learned more about his ability and himself in general, and even figured out how to call on it, but not how to control it just yet. And he had no idea what it actually did other than consume anything it came in contact with like a giant parasite.
When the young boy had become a young man, being about seventeen years old, he had finally gained complete control of his ability and how to control his insatiable hunger. Atleast that is what he thought, in truth he had simply 'come to terms' with it, as through his living in the wild his sentient self had joined with the beastial instincts of the hollow.
With clothes even worse looking than those of farmers in this age, Kehl made his way to the village which he was planning on seeking help in several years prior, but had been.. Obstructed.. His life in the wilderness had tempered him from a young farmer boy into a muscular warrior, which made his sudden entry into the small village a surprise to everyone. And as was common with strange or sudden occurances the gossip spread like wildfire. Kehl on the other hand was relieved that he was feeling no powerful instinctual urges the moment he saw another human, if he even could be called that, and went to the closest house to ask for food and a place to sleep for the night. Sure he could hunt his own food, sure he could sleep on the ground like he had done for several years now, but he wanted to try to correct his life, forget about all the insanity which had plagued it since THAT day.
Sadly it seemed inevitable that he would fail such a simple thing, as when he found a place to stay and laid down on the simple bed which had been made for him, and he had a moment of peace and quiet, he realized that he simply could not live like that. He did not know why, it just seemed impossible for him to return to his quiet life style as a farmer. And then there was the power, the power! The ability he had that gave him the power to end a life with the flick of a wrist, the power to kill or torture, the power to utterly consume! In that one moment of perfect clarity, Kehl knew what he must do.
The day turned to night, and then suddenly a loud shriek echoed across the village, from the very house the 'strange warrior' had been given a place to rest. As villagers and farmers alike came running to the house with primite wood and stone weapons the front of the primitive house exploded from sheer force, giving the villagers a clear view of Kehl tearing the throat of the wife of the house, her children and husband lying dead, half eaten, half incinerated, on the floor around him. The scene shocked all of them, several shouting in panic while others was sickened by the sight. But even more was furious, even if a deep fear was etched in them. Then with one final tear and swallow, Kehl turned his head toward the mob staring at him, his now yellow glowing eyes shining with insanity and worse.
Nearly half of the mob ran, first a few, then shortly followed by others. The ones that did not run, were those whom were too scared and shocked to even move an inch, but there was also those whos courage was admirable as they stood their ground, readying their weapons to strike him down. Sadly for them, they were a lost cause now that Kehl had completely forsaken his humanity for the power which coursed through him. With a piercing cry almost resembling that of a hollow, Kehl's reiatsu blazed sky high, blowing away the corpses by his feet, several of the child bodies flying into the still intact walls, splashing blood all over them. And as he did he lunged straight for the man in the middle of the mob, his burning arm comming into contact with the mans spear and completely incinerating it on touch, his hand held like a claw shortly tore a large hole in the mans chest. A moment later a wave of coruptive flames shot out from Kehl and hit the other men who, though surprised, had been quick to turn toward him and was just about to stab him. However as the flames came in contact with their bodies they all fell appart screaming in pain as their bodies was being consumed by the soul burning fire.
After he was finished with the few who had stayed behind, he rose up from the bloodied ground once more drenched in the blood of others as he snarled at those running, it seemed like he had completely lost his mind but in truth he was merely letting his powerful instincts run loose. The beast Kehl had become closed his fists, as the dark purple flames seemed to focus toward them, then as he opened them forcibly, the palms out toward the closest few houses they exploded in a blast of pure force created from the reiatsu and just moments later a fire spread from them with an unnatural speed that made it impossible for the villagers to outrun it as they were surrounded when all houses began to burn in a ring-like formation. While Kehl stood still watching he began to cackle maniacally as he observed the specktable, his voice being warped like that of a hollow.
Giggling to himself Kehl began to slowly walk toward the villagers who had not been burned to crisp by the fire and instead had been trapped within. However, before Kehl could reach the cowering and whimpering villagers a sudden pressure appeared in the world around Kehl which made him stagger. And as he stopped to look around he saw how strange glowing portals opened as several men and women with black clothing and a kind of massive knives at their belts came through them and went down toward him, surrounding him while drawing the shining objects. They announced themselves as 'Shinigami of the tenth Division', anymore he did not catch or care off, but it was obvious they wanted to kill him for one reason or another. However the reason was not what one might first have thought, they were infact not here to save the village, they were here to eliminate a potential future threat, that being a human with high reiatsu.
As his thoughts was set in motion he visibly calmed down, however his reiatsu was still high and burning, causing the ground around him to wither and die. He was about to tell them to leave him be, as it was the best for them, when several of them suddenly jumped toward him, the rest standing back and chanting in a language he did not understand. A low distorted growl escaped Kehl's clenched jaws as he reverted to his beastial instinct driven self which seemed to wait for several seconds as the shinigami drew closer, and just as they were about to reach him he shot up from the ground with a blast of reiatsu which made several of them flinch or cover themselves, however unlike with the other humans the effect of his reiatsu was barely none at all, though it was a fairly weak attack in itself too. Though that was definitely not all to it, Kehl's beasital self was relentless and only stopped once it had defeated its pray, and so on its way up the flaming body of the young man twisted around and spun about upside down, with his legs out like in a upside-down roundhouse kick which hit two of the shinigami who barely managed to guard themselves in time, but as they went flying down toward the ground it became obvious that the kick had been far more powerful than what they could handle. And as he continued his spin he clawed with his right hand which had reiatsu shooting out of his fingers to lengthen them, tearing a large gash in the closest one and as the man fell back on the ground, clutching his wound, it became apparent that it was spreading, almost like it was decaying the mans flesh like a vile poison.
With their initial assault a failiure the Shinigami who had their blades out jumped back, just in time for the kido specialists to finish their chant, sending blasts of energy toward Kehl who was still in the air. The first which was about to make contact was a powerful white bolt of lightning which the young man tore in two with a single swipe of his reiatsu covered hands. The second and third was not so easy however, as one was a shot of red fire, and another a blue crash down. With a bang the red fire hit him in the side, diving into the corruptive reiatsu which surrounded him but managing its way through and exploding against him, which sent the young man careening through the air as the third kido came after him. Being ready now, however not understanding what it was, Kehl shifted around as he clenched his right fist once more for a moment before releasing it like he had done previously, sending an explosion of pure force outward toward the kido which rippled but otherwise remained intact as it passed straight through and hit a surprised Kehl head-on.
With a loud 'ka-choom' like sound Kehl was now falling toward the ground, his body reeking and his clothes tattered, while his body was torn and heavily damaged. However this did not stop him from moving, oh no it didn't, and as the Shinigami came for him, thinking they had asured victory, he twisted around in mid air once more and kicked the closest one right on the chin, as the sound of breaking bones could be heard, followed by the man flying off toward the still burning houses. Kehl landed just in time to block one of the Shinigami's swords, with his bare arm it appeared, however the reiatsu surrounding him had turned itself into a deadly weapon which allowed him to defend himself as well, however just as he was about to counter-attack another shot of red fire, chantless this time, hit him on the side of his head which sent him into inbalance as he staggered for a second, just enough to let the Shinigami who he had blocked, and the one whom was sneaking up on him from behind, time to strike.
The sound of blade piercing flesh was heard, twice even, as the Shinigami's zanpakutou tore into Kehl's body, piercing him in the chest just beside the heart and the other through his side, right under the left lung. Nearly instantly the powerful reiatsu which had emveloped the young man seemed to disappear, as the man stared down as the blade which was now dripping with HIS blood. This was impossible, with such power, how could he be beaten!? With his whole body shaking and trembling from the pain his new wounds caused, as well as the burns he had recieved earlier but been able to ward off thank to his reiatsu, Kehl collapsed onto the ground as the Shinigami withdrew their swords. The two looked at each others for a second, before they wiped the blood of their blades and resheated them. And after helping their wounded, they disappeared back to wherever they came from. They had left kehl for dead, yet that was to be one of Soul Societies bigger mistakes.
